Huskies Rebound For 5-2 Win To Even Series At USC
March 30, 2018 | Baseball
LOS ANGELESย โย Husky pitcher Joe DeMers calmed down after a shaky first inning and Washington's offense rallied behind its ace pitcher to lift the visiting Huskies to a 5-2 win Friday night at Dedeaux field in Los Angeles.
ย
The come-from-behind win by the Huskies (12-11, 5-3 Pac-12) evened the three-game series against USC (13-10, 3-5) at a game apiece.
ย
USC got some good swings on DeMers in the first inning to snag a 2-0 lead, but that would be its only offense on the evening. After a single and double, clean-up hitter Dillon Paulson laced a double over the head of Christian Jones in right field to score both runners.
ย
After the first, DeMers (2-1) settled into a nice groove. The junior allowed just three more hits after the first, allowing six total in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six before he left in the eighth inning.
ย
Washington answered back quickly in the top of the second to tie the game back up, 2-2. The Huskies loaded the bases off USC starter Solomon Bates (1-1) with no outs and were able to push two runners across the plate โ the first when freshman Braiden Ward drove home Joe Wainhouse on a single. The second run scored when Noah Hsue followed Ward with a perfect suicide squeeze bunt on a 3-2 pitch that scored Nick Kahle.
ย
The Huskies took their first lead in the series, 3-2, in the fifth when Levi Jordan followed a Mason Cerrillo single with a double down the left-field line. Cerrillo scored on his hit, just Jordan's second since Pac-12 play started.
ย
Washington padded its lead in the seventh when Wainhouse collected a two-out, bases-loaded single on a 3-2 pitch off Isaac Esqueda that scored a pair of Huskies and made the score 5-2.
ย
That was plenty of offense for DeMers. He handed the ball over to Alex Hardy with a runner on in the eighth, but the senior stranded that runner and recorded the final three outs to pick up his third save of the season.
ย
Washington reached double-digits with 10 hits, getting two each from Cerrillo, Jordan and Wainhouse.
ย
The two teams wrap up the series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
