Dawgs Roll Into Outdoor Season At Trojan Invite
March 15, 2018 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – With final exams wrapping up, what better way to kick off Spring Break than with a trip to Southern California and a track meet? Washington heads outdoors for the first time in 2018, returning to the Trojan Invitational for the third year in a row, taking a group of sprinters, jumpers, and throwers to compete this Friday and Saturday at USC's Loker Stadium.
Friday will feature just a handful of Dawgs as the hammer throws and discus throws will take place Friday afternoon. All other events will be on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. and going until approximately 2:45 p.m.
Along with USC, the Huskies will be matching up with squads from Washington State, Utah, BYU, Cal State Fullerton, and UC Davis.
In the hammer throw to begin things on Friday, Connor Jost will compete on the men's side and Angel Nkwonta and Katie Wardsworth will throw for the women. Later in the discus, Gina Flint, Jonah Wilson, and Jose Padilla will all spin the platter for the first time this year.
Saturday will let UW's javelin crew stretch out their arms for the first time this year. Pac-12 scorer Denham Patricelli will throw as will redshirt freshmen Jacob Wachtendonk and Dalton Sugg. NCAA Prelim qualifier Emmy Engle and Katherine Taylor will throw for the women, as will multi-eventer Hannah Rusnak, one of several events she has on top.
Rounding out the throws, the shot put will feature Nkwonta and Flint on the women's side and freshman Jonah Wilson for the men.
A full group of Husky sprinters will heat up the track on Saturday. In the 100-meters, scheduled to be in the blocks are Khalil Winfrey, Jordan Lucas, Kemuel Santana, Iman Brown, Jelani Heath, Olivia Ribera, and Sarah Stavig. Brown, Imani Apostol, Ribera, Raquel Tjernagel, Jacopo Spanò, Ryan Croson, Evan Mafilas, Winfrey, Santana, and Lucas are all entered in the 200-meters as well.
Moving up to 400-meters, Croson, Michael Thomas, Mafilas, and Jason Palmer will run for the men with Carolyn Birkenfeld, Apostol, Tjernagel, and Stavig going for the women.
Darhian Mills is entered in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, as is Morganne Hill, with Rusnak also in the 100m hurdles. Carly Lester and Hanna Tarleton also take on the 400m hurdles for their outdoor openers.
The jumpers and vaulters will also get their outdoor season underway on Saturday. Chase Smith is slated to go coming off a 10th-place finish at NCAA Indoors, and he'll be joined by Lev Marcus, Blaise Black, Zach Shugart, and Parker Kennedy. The women will have Annika Dayton, Tori Franzen, Candace Ho, Makenna Barton, and Monica Cohen competing.
The women's long jump will have Heath and Rusnak both jumping, with Jaylen Taylor in both the men's long and triple jumps, and in the women's high jump, Mayson Douglass will look to clear some PRs.
