Throwers Start Strong In SoCal
March 16, 2018 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES - Several personal-bests from the Husky hammer and discus throwers made for a nice start to both the outdoor track season and the two-day Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium and Cromwell Field today. Angel Nkwonta and Katie Wardsworth posted new top-10 marks in the women's hammer throw while Jose Padilla and Jonah Wilson went 1-2 in the men's discus with potential NCAA Prelim qualifying marks.
The Trojan Invite is the opening outdoor meet for the Dawgs, with all but the distance crew traveling to USC. The majority of the events will take place Saturday starting at 10 a.m. but the hammer and discus competitions provided a great appetizer before the main course.
In the hammer throws this afternoon, Nkwonta showed signs of major progress similar to her weight throw improvements indoors. She improved her PR by 19 feet, getting a best mark of 180-feet, 11-inches to finish third. That moves her up to the No. 4 spot in school history. Wardsworth, the senior transfer from Washington State, went 173-3 to place fifth and she now goes to No. 6 on the Husky top-10 list.
Redshirt freshman Connor Jost was ninth in the men's hammer throw with a big new PR of 168-2. That mark is 13-feet farther than his best from a year ago.
The discus brought the first win for the Dawgs as sophomore Padilla got a big PR with a toss of 179-5, nine feet better than his best mark from 2017. Freshman Jonah Wilson, one of the top prep discus throwers in U.S. history, had a strong showing in his first college discus competition, as he took second with a mark of 175-9. Both of those marks would have qualified for NCAA West Preliminaries a year ago. Last season, Padilla's 170-foot throw was best on the squad all year, so the Dawgs already have two marks well past that on day one of 2018.
Senior Gina Flint finished sixth in the women's discus with a best of 145-10, which came on her sixth attempt.
