SEATTLE - Back in the win column after a home sweep of the Arizona schools, the Husky volleyball team will look to continue building momentum this week but faces a difficult road trip down to Los Angeles to face the ranked USC and UCLA squads. The teams met just three weeks ago, with USC and UCLA getting four set wins in Seattle, so the Dawgs will look to return the favor in the rematch. The weekly schedule is bumped a day earlier than usual this week, as the Huskies visit 13th-ranked USC on Thursday for a 8:00 p.m. start and then meet the 21st-ranked Bruins on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The matches will be televised by Pac-12 Networks, on the Washington channel and not on the national station.
Last week the Dawgs snapped their five-match losing skid with 3-1 wins over Arizona State and Arizona. That got them back to 7-7 in Pac-12 play, tied for fifth, and 15-9 overall. The Dawgs saw improvements in all phases, especially serving and blocking, where they led 19-8 in aces over the two matches and 25.5 to 17 in blocks. The big story of the win over Arizona was freshman Claire Hoffman's 21 kills on a .463 attack percentage which was the most by a Husky freshman since 2011 and helped her win Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, the first Pac-12 award all year for UW.
USC also had an impressive weekend, sweeping both then-No. 16 Oregon and Oregon State to get to 18-7 and 10-4 in Pac-12 in second-place. USC is No. 6 nationally in the RPI. In conference matches, the Trojans are hitting .255, third best, and holding opponents to a .216 percentage. They are fourth in aces at 1.38 per set and seventh in blocks with 2.30. Khalia Lanier and Brooke Botkin are third and fourth, respectively, in kills per set, with Lanier at 4.55 and Botkin at 4.45. Freshman setter Raquel Lazaro is second in the league with 11.72 assists per set, and Lanier is second in aces with 0.41. Senior libero Victoria Garrick is fourth with 4.88 digs per set.
21st-ranked UCLA went to five sets to beat Oregon State last week then lost in four sets to the Ducks to go to 7-7 in conference and 12-9 overall. UCLA is forcing the second-lowest opponent attack percentage in Pac-12 play at .202, but hitting .188 to rank 10th in that category. But the Bruins hit .235 in Seattle in the first meeting led by the 27 kills of sophomore Mac May. UCLA also leads the league in aces (1.43) and digs (17.78) in league matches. May is sixth in kills per set at 3.96 and the top server with 0.47 aces per set. Senior Zana Muno's 5.41 digs per set leads the Pac-12 as well.
