SEATTLE - Round two of Pac-12 play opens with Washington looking to climb back up the conference standings, so what better place to start than the mountain schools? The Huskies head to Utah on Friday, Oct. 26, then Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 28, to face two more teams aiming to make noise in the second half of Pac-12 play. Friday's 5 p.m. Pacific time start and Sunday's 11 a.m. start will both be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
Washington went 5-5 over the first 10 Pac-12 matches to sit tied for sixth at the halfway point, but the Huskies have lost three straight after a 5-2 start. The Dawgs dropped a few spots in the AVCA poll to No. 21 this week and come in at No. 17 in the latest RPI. Utah and Colorado are both just a game behind the Huskies at 4-6, tied for eighth. Both teams are coming off the desert road trip where they each lost to Arizona but defeated Arizona State.
The Huskies fell in four sets in both matches last week against USC and UCLA. Offensive efficiency has been one of the main culprits, as the Huskies have hit over .200 just once in their past five, a .323 mark in a sweep at California. The Huskies made a lineup move between matches, starting true freshman Claire Hoffman at outside hitter and moving Samantha Drechsel to the opposite, and the percentage improved from .150 versus USC to .196 against the Bruins, but the Bruins won the serving battle with six aces to just one for the Dawgs.
Utah gave UW its first conference loss of the season, upsetting the Huskies in four sets in Seattle on Sept. 30. Utah also had a recent sweep of Oregon at home. In conference play, Utah is hitting .210 and limiting opponents to a .206 mark. They are second in the leage with 2.58 blocks per set. Dani Drews is ninth with 3.63 kills per set and setter Bailey Choy is second with 0.47 service aces per set. Freshman middle Kennedi Evans ranks fourth in blocks at 1.28 and another freshman, Phoebe Grace, is eighth at 1.12. Libero Brianna Doehrmann is eighth in digs at 4.28.
Washington won the first meeting with Colorado in four sets, with a big edge at the service line, 12 aces to 3. Colorado is fourth in attack percentage at .228 in conference but ranks 11th in opponent percentage, allowing a .233 mark. The Buffs are third in blocks at 2.49 but 12th in digs at 13.90. Senior middle Naghede Abu ranks third in the league in attack percentage at .367 and fifth in blocks at 1.23. Alexa Smith's 3.50 kills per set leads the offense and Anyse Smith adds 2.78 and is hitting .272 in Pac-12 matches.
