SEATTLE - Back on the road for the second week in a row, the Husky volleyball team will play back-to-back nights for the only time in conference play, taking on California and No. 2 Stanford this Friday and Saturday nights. Washington (12-4, 4-2 Pac-12) is in a five-way logjam in second-place in the Pac-12 behind the 6-0 Cardinal, but most importantly the Dawgs will strive to maintain a consistently high level of play in the Bay Area. 18th-ranked Washington has earned three wins over ranked opponents in Pac-12 play but lost its last match in straight sets to unranked Arizona State, although ASU moved to No. 25 in the rankings this week and is now 4-2 in Pac-12 play.
First up the Huskies will take on California (9-8, 1-5 Pac-12) on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Haas Pavilion in a match that will be live stream only. Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. the Huskies and Cardinal face off in Maples Pavilion. That match will be on the Pac-12 Network Bay Area and Washington channels, but not on the national channel.
The Bears are coming off their first Pac-12 win of the season, as they upset Utah on the road in five sets last Sunday. Cal was knocking on the door prior to that, falling in five sets to Arizona State, UCLA, and Colorado before breaking through, so Ca's 1-5 league record could be much better. In Pac-12 matches, Cal is hitting .190 and opponents are hitting .215 against them. Cal is seventh in blocks with 2.22 per set and eighth in aces with 1.11 and seventh in digs with 15.30. Middle Preslie Anderson is second in the league in attack percentage with a .368 mark in Pac-12 play and Lauren Forte is fifth in blocks with 1.22 per set while hitting .313. Mima Mirkovic leads the team in kills in conference with 2.96 per set and she had 16 in the win over the Utes. The Huskies have won the past 11 meetings in the series with the Bears.
Stanford has lost just once, in five sets at current No. 1-ranked BYU. Pac-12 Player of the Year Kathryn Plummer leads the league with 5.55 kills per set in league play, and setter Jenna Gray has a league-leading 13.50 assists per set, while libero Morgan Hentz also leads in digs with 5.50 per set, and Tami Alade leads the Pac-12 in blocks at 1.65. Stanford is hitting .313 in Pac-12 play and holding opponents to .178, both tops in the league, and its 3.08 blocks per set leads the way there as well. The Huskies were the last Pac-12 team to beat the Cardinal, winning in Seattle last November, but the Cardinal have won nine in a row over UW in Palo Alto, including a five-setter last year.
