SEATTLE - A long and winding road begins for the eighth-ranked Husky volleyball team this week, as Washington will spend the next month away from home, playing nine matches over that span, starting with three this week in Malibu, Calif. as part of the Pepperdine Asics Classic. The Huskies (5-1) will take on the host Waves of Pepperdine along with Missouri State and Wyoming, none of which UW has seen since 1994.
Friday will be the third, and final, double-header of the season for the Dawgs, as they start early with the Missouri State Bears at 10 a.m. and then face the Waves at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UW finishes its stay with a 2 p.m. match against Wyoming.
The road trip will take UW on to Maryland next week and then to Washington State and Arizona State in the same week to start Pac-12 play, followed by a trip to L.A. to face UCLA and USC.
This was a stretch that stood out to Head Coach Keegan Cook as a crucial one at the start of the season. "That trip is going to be a challenging time for us. We'll go to L.A. twice, we'll go to Maryland, we'll go to Washington State, we'll go to Arizona State. So we're going to be tested and we're going to need to really count on a lot of intangibles to get through that stretch."
Missouri State is receiving votes in the current AVCA coaches poll, and would be ranked 31st if the top-25 was carried out. The Bears gained attention last week with an upset of then-No. 20 Ohio State. MSU is 4-2 including a 1-3 loss to then-No. 8 Kansas and a five-set loss to Lipscomb and a five-set win over North Carolina State. Senior Lynsey Wright was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week this week, thanks in part to 15 kills and no errors against the Buckeyes. The win was payback for MSU as it lost to Ohio State in the NCAA first round last year after winning the Missouri Valley Conference. Lily Johnson is leading the team with 3.92 kills per set and Emily Butters has 4.88 digs per set.
Pepperdine and the Huskies have not met since 1991. The Waves are 4-2 with wins over Utah Valley, Fresno State, Northeastern and Weber State, and losses to San Jose State and Cal State Northridge. The Waves are hitting .232 thus far and holding opponents to .189, and are serving tough with 1.65 aces per set. Hannah Frohling leads the attack with 3.74 kills per set and Heidi Dyer has had 2.95 per set. Jasmine Gross is hitting .362 with 2.83 kills per set and 1.17 blocks. Blossom Sato is posting 11.35 assists per set.
The Cowgirls are 3-3 but just missed an upset over No. 21 Purdue last week in a match that went five sets. Their three wins came over South Dakota, Eastern Michigan, and Jacksonville. Wyoming is hitting .233 and limiting opponents to just .167. Emily Lewis is leading the squad with 3.75 kills per set while Jackie McBride is hitting .316 with 1.92 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. Washington and Wyoming last met in the NCAA first round in 1994, a win for the Huskies.
