September 04, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies triumphed over the New Mexico Lobos 1-0 in overtime Monday, taking home the 2017 Husky Invitational championship on a Kimberly Keever goal in the 94th minute. The Huskies are now 4-2-0 on the season after winning both their games this weekend, while New Mexico drops to 3-3-0.
Sarah Shimer matched her 2016 total with her third shutout of the season and second straight, making two saves against New Mexico to run her scoreless streak to 184 minutes.
Keever's game-winner came midway through the first overtime period. Dominique Bond-Flasza knocked the ball back into the box after a weak clearance. Keever was there and got her head on it to redirect it over the goalkeeper and into the net to win the game.
The Huskies threatened throughout regulation as well, with 2017 Husky Invitational Offensive MVP Shannon Simon sending a sliding shot low and wide of the net at 3' off an Anissa Dadkhah corner. Simon would also fire away from a dangerous position in the box in the 4th minute, only to have that shot blocked.
A Dadkhah free kick from 30 yards out at 12' came close to giving the Huskies another early lead. Dadkhah curved the ball over the wall and toward the close corner of the net but the Lobos goalkeeper tracked it well and kept it out.
Shots were 7-3 after 45 minutes of play, with Washington sending four on goal.
Dadkhah ended another Husky attack at 67', this time with a shot that just barely went wide. The attack started with a Mireya Grey cross which Amanda Perez found in the box and sent back to Dadkhah at the top in a better shooting position. Dadkhah's shot skimmed off the outside of the post wide.
Coming off the bench in the second half, Ameera Hussen provided an impressive boost for the Huskies. Hussen's threat began with a shot off the crossbar in the 85th minute after the freshman dribbled through the defense to the middle of the box. She would end the game with two shots on goal in 22 minutes.
"[Hussen] was a huge part of our success," said Head Coach Lesle Gallimore. "She's got a great soccer-thinking mind, she was calm and composed out there."
Shots favored the Huskies 15-6 after regulation, with shots on goal 5-2 Washington.
Keever's goal came on the fourth shot of overtime for the Huskies, who did not allow New Mexico to record any chances in the extra period before earning the W.
The Huskies will hit the road this upcoming week, heading to Portland for two games. First up will be a game against Boise State on Friday, September 8 at 4:00 pm PT. The Huskies will also take on the Baylor Bears on Sunday, September 10 at 12:00 pm PT.
