Shimer's Third Straight Shutout Helps Huskies To 2-0 Win
September 08, 2017 | Women's Soccer
PORTLAND, Ore. – In the first game of the Nike Portland Invitational, the Washington Huskies shutout the Boise State Broncos 2-0 on the strength of two second-half goals by Sianna Siemonsma. The Huskies, who are now 5-2-0, did not allow a shot in the first 73 minutes of the game. Boise State drops to 3-3-1 with the loss.
Sarah Shimer recorded her fourth shutout of the season, surpassing her total from last year just seven games into 2017. Shimer made four saves, all in the second half, to stretch her shutout streak to 274 minutes over the last three games, all clean sheets for Shimer.
"Sarah came out pretty big for us on a couple of saves, she did what she needed to do," said Head Coach Lesle Gallimore. "Our team did a great job of defending to the death, really making it so if they're going to get a goal on us they're going to have to earn it."
The two-goal game was Siemonsma's first multi-goal game of her young career and gave her three goals on the season, tied for the team lead with Shannon Simon and Kimberly Keever. It was the third multi-goal game by a Husky this season.
"Sianna got the tallies tonight, but it was really a team win," said Gallimore. "Asia Briscoe came in and had good minutes again tonight, Sianna, Mireya [Grey], Rachel [Wheeler]...all our subs played well."
The Huskies dominated the ball in the first half, recording eight shots and keeping play in the attacking area. Simon started things with a shot at 19' from outside the box that curved high over the goal.
Lisa Jensen threatened four minutes later. Jensen's cross went a bit too far and almost found the goal, beating Boise State's goalie. It was too high, however, and hit the corner of the crossbar to stay out.
At 35', Amanda Perez headed on a cross that created a dangerous opportunity. Mireya Grey blasted a shot off the volley from Perez's header, only to have it saved.
It was in the 41st minute that the Huskies came within inches of taking the lead. Keever took the initial shot from above the box that banged off the middle of the crossbar. That rebound found Anissa Dadkhah, whose shot was knocked away by the goalie. Asia Brisco followed that and let loose with a rocket before the goalie could recover, only to have one of the four Boise State defenders who had crashed to the goal line to protect the empty net get in front of it and clear.
Shots were 8-0 after 45 scoreless minutes of play.
Siemonsma scored her first of two six minutes into the second half to break the tie. The sequence began when Keever stole the ball on the wing from a Boise State defender, giving her room to attack the side of the box. The senior then sent a cross across the grass and through the box to Siemonsma, evading two defenders to make it to the freshman. Siemonsma took a one-touch shot and powered it into goal before the goalie could reposition for her second goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.
Siemonsma scored again less than ten minutes later, this time with a header. Jessica Udovich sent in a lifted pass to the edge of the box. Siemonsma got her head on it and lofted it high toward goal, getting it just right to drop it over the goalie and in front of the crossbar for her first career two-goal game.
Ameera Hussen had the Huskies best chance the rest of the way as they defended their comfortable lead en route to the win. Hussen had a running header in the 77th minute off Sam Kokoska's corner. Hussen was searching for the opposite corner but sent the ball just wide.
The final shot tally favored Washington 13-6, with shots on goal 9-4.
Gallimore was happy with the overall defensive effort. "Boise State is a fast team, they want to get forward really quick so I was pleased with our effort with not letting them get behind us."
The Huskies will be back at it on Sunday, September 10, taking on the Baylor Bears at 12:00 pm PT.
