Huskies Throttle Bears 1-0
September 10, 2017 | Women's Soccer
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Washington Huskies continued their dominant defensive stretch, defeating the Baylor Bears 1-0 Sunday in their fourth consecutive shutout. Amanda Perez scored the only goal in the game, coming on a penalty kick in the 48th minute. The Huskies are 6-2-0 on the season with that win, while Baylor falls to 5-1-1 with its first defeat of the season. Washington was named the Nike Portland Invitational champion as well, going 2-0-0.
Sarah Shimer made two saves in the game to stretch her shutout streak to 364 minutes, recording her fifth shutout of 2017. Shimer now has the longest shutout streak by a Husky goalie since 2004. Her fifth shutout also gave her nine in her career, tying her for seventh-most in Washington history.
"I'm extremely proud of the team's effort today," said Head Coach Lesle Gallimore. "A quick turnaround between games is always physically and mentally difficult and I felt that our team showed a lot of poise and grit against a very fast, physical, and dynamic Baylor team."
Jessica Udovich was named the Defensive MVP of the Nike Portland Invitational, while Sianna Siemonsma was named the Offensive MVP.
A contentious first half ended without a goal despite several opportunities for the Huskies. Shannon Simon had a free kick from 35 yards out in the 35th minute that did not have the curve it needed, sailing wide of goal.
At 39', Udovich sent in a lofted ball from midfield that resulted in a free kick after Kimberly Keever was fouled going up for a header. Dominique Bond-Flasza took the free kick that resulted in a handball just outside of the penalty area.
Perez took the resulting free kick, getting her shot over the wall but sending it inches high of the crossbar for a goal kick.
Bond-Flasza had another dangerous free kick at 42', sending in a cross from the right wing. Baylor's goalie met the cross along with a number of crashing Washington forwards, catching it to avoid a shot from a few feet out.
Shots were 3-2 Washington after a scoreless first 45.
A slide tackle by Baylor in the box at 48' led to the game's only goal. Perez took the penalty kick, going left and fooling the goalie to make it 1-0. It was Perez's first goal since October 1, 2015 against UCLA
Ameera Hussen continued to generate offense from off the bench, this time with two shots within a minute at 82'. Hussen beat a defender from the left wing, then sent her shot toward the far post wide. Hussen would fire again from the right wing shortly thereafter, with that rocket caught by the Baylor goalie.
Washington allowed only one shot on goal in the second half and only two total in the game to get the win. Shots were 10-8 in Washington's favor overall.
The Huskies will return home for a four-game homestand next. That homestand starts with a matchup against the Seattle Redhawks on Friday, September 15 at 7:00 pm PT, the last game before conference play begins for Washington. Tickets for all home games are available online.
