No. 10 Washington Falls To No. 24 Akron

AKRON, Ohio β The No. 10 University of Washington men's soccer team fell to No. 24 Akron 2-0 on Friday night at FirstEnergy StadiumβCub Cadet Field during the first road match of the season.
The Zips scored a goal in each half to hand the Huskies their first loss of 2017.
Akron held an 8-1 shot advantage in the first half, but the Huskies matched the intensity in the second as both teams got off seven shots.
Akron controlled the majority of possession in the first half and broke through in the 31st minute. The Zips gathered a lob pass from the midway line, turned and drove a shot into the lower left corner to take a 1-0 lead.
Washington mounted several attacks in the second half but the Zips' defense always seemed to counter. The Huskies earned three corner kicks and got off two shots over a three-minute span, but couldn't convert as Akron's goalkeeper Ben Lundt made one of his two saves off junior Quentin Pearson's shot at the 52nd minute.
The Zips added to their lead in the 61st minute after scoring on a hard, low shot which deflected off a Husky defender and snuck past Husky goalkeeper Saif Kerawala.
Trailing 2-0, the Huskies threatened late as sophomore Joey Parish's header was saved at the 88th minute.
In the match, Akron held a 15-8 advantage in shots, while the Huskies held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Pearson and Parish each posted two shots to lead Washington's offense. Kerawala recorded a match-high three saves in goal.
Next up, Washington travels to Spokane to play Gonzaga on Thursday (Sept. 7).
