Bremer Kβs 11, Huskies Hit 3 Homers In 7-3 Win Over UCLA
April 07, 2017 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES Β βΒ The Huskies hit three home runs β part of a season-high 13-hit night β and pitcher Noah Bremer set a career-high with 11 strikeouts as Washington (17-11, 5-2 Pac-12) beat UCLA, 7-3, in game one of the its three-game series Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
"What a great way to start the weekend," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "This is a tough place to play and I'm proud of the way we played for nine innings."
The Huskies were 1-8 in Meggs' first three trips to his alma mater. But the heart of UW's batting order β MJ Hubbs, Joey Morgan and Willie MacIver β combined to go 8-for-13 at the plate and drove home six of seven runs to back Bremer on the hill and lead Washington to its second victory since 2007 in Westwood.
Β
Bremer (3-2), a junior from Berkeley, Calif., came out of the bullpen to throw the final seven innings of the game and struck out 11 of 25 batters he faced. He allowed two hits, walked two and the only two runs came in on left fielder Brett Stephens' second home run on the night.
Β
Stephens got the UCLA (13-14, 6-4) offense going in the first inning with a lead-off home run to give the Bruins a quick 1-0 lead. Stephens hammered a 3-2 pitch from Huskies' starter Leo Nierenberg onto the roof of the Gifford Hitting Facility behind the right-field fence for his first home run of the season.
Β
Washington answered back in the third with a pair of runs after there were two outs to take a 2-1 lead. Morgan doubled home Hubbs, who reached on an infield single, and MacIver chased Morgan home on a RBI single.
Β
With a 2-1 advantage in the pocket, Meggs dipped into his bullpen and brought in his junior ace Bremer. And the strategy paid off as Washington scored in five-straight innings starting with the fifth inning.
Β
Morgan extended the Huskies' lead to 4-1 in the fifth when he launched a two-run homer with one out off of UCLA starter Griffin Canning. The UW junior catcher sat on a breaking ball and launched Canning's first pitch of the at-bat over the fence in left-field for his first home run of the season.
Β
Washington chased Canning in the sixth when they once again scored a run after there were two outs. Hubbs singled home AJ Graffanino to make the score 5-1 and ended UCLA's starter's day after 119 pitches.
Β
In 2016, Canning and Bremer faced each other and each threw a complete game, six-hitter, but Canning earned the 1-0 shutout win. This time out, things were different for Canning as the Huskies touched him up with 10 hits and the five runs.
Β
Stephens connected for his second home run of the night in the sixth off of Bremer, snapping a streak of 32-straight scoreless innings by the Huskies' bullpen to start Pac-12 play. The blast cut UW's lead to 5-3 and was UCLA's first hit since Stephens' home run to start the game.
Β
But, UW got the runs back with solo home runs by John Naff in the seventh and Hubbs in the eighth to extend its lead back to four runs. Β For Naff and Hubbs, it was their second home runs of the season and marked the first time this year that the Huskies have hit more than one homer in a game.
"Leo and Noah were sharp, and I liked the way we answered each time they scored," Meggs said. "I'm proud of our guys."
Β
Eight of nine Husky starters picked up a hit on the night. Hubbs was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. MacIver was 3-for-5 with a RBI and Morgan was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.
Β
Nierenberg struck out three in his two innings to combine with Bremer for a Husky season-high 14 strikeouts.
Β
The Huskies continue their three-game series against UCLA, with game two Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
