UW Wins, 6-3, To Clinch First Series At UCLA Since 2005

LOS ANGELES – Junior catcher Joey Morgan was 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Washington past UCLA, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win secured the Huskies (18-11, 6-2 Pac-12) first series victory on the road against the Bruins (13-15, 6-5) since 2005 and keeps UW at second in the Pac-12 standings behind red-hot Oregon State.
The Huskies and Coach Lindsay Meggs entered the weekend 1-8 on the road against his alma mater since arriving at UW in 2010. By virtue of winning the first two games of the series, the Huskies have clinched their first series at UCLA since a road-sweep in 2005 and have won back-to-back series against the Bruins for the first time since 2005-06.
"It was a great day for our program," Meggs said following the Huskies third-straight Conference win. "I'm happy for our guys."
The Huskies led from start to finish and the offense collected double-digit hits with 11 for a second-consecutive game. Levi Jordan had three hits and MJ Hubbs had two hits and drove in two runs to support three pitchers that combined to stymie UCLA's offense for a second-straight game.
"Jack's (Meggs) home run got us on the board early and Joey Morgan was a force in the middle of the batting order," Coach Meggs said.
Morgan is 6-for-7 after the first two games of the series with three doubles, a home run, four RBIs and has bumped up his season average to a team-high .362.
The coaches son, Jack, staked the Huskies to a quick 1-0 lead with a one-out home run in the first inning. The senior center fielder took an 0-1 offering from UCLA starter Moises Ceja (1-2) over the right field fence for his team-high tying third homer of the season.
The Huskies added to their total in the sixth inning, but failed to take full advantage of a great scoring opportunity. Hubbs, Morgan and Willie MacIver combined to go 8-for-13 in Friday night's 7-3 opening win and the trio reached on a double, single and walk to start the inning. Only Hubbs came around to score when pinch-hitter Nick Kahle grounded into a double play that made the score 2-0.
UW did not miss its opportunity to add to the advantage in the seventh as they scored three times to make it 5-0. Hubbs drove in Jordan and Kyle London with a bases-loaded single and Morgan doubled home Meggs.
UCLA got a run back after the seventh inning stretch on a solo home run by freshman Michael Toglia. He hit a 3-1 pitch from Jordan Jones off the scoreboard in right-center field for his first career homer and the first off Jones this season.
That was the only run allowed by Jones (4-4) over 4 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up four hits, walked two and struck out a pair to pick up his second consecutive win in long relief.
The Huskies made it 6-1 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by AJ Graffanino that scored Kahle, who walked to start the inning.
UCLA scratched back into the game in the eight with two runs off UW reliever Greg Minier that cut the Huskies' lead to 6-3. Kyle Cuellar singled home Brett Stephens and Sean Bourchard was chased home on a sacrifice fly by Nick Kern.
Minier gave up a one-out single in the ninth, but was able to induce an around-the-horn double play out of Daniel Amaral to end the game and give the Huskies a 6-3 victory.
Chris Micheles started and pitched the first two innings perfectly before giving way to Jones in the third after allowing a walk and a single. Minier went the final 2 1/3 innings to close things out.
"Chirs, Jordan and Greg were all outstanding on the mound," Meggs assessed of his pitching staff. "All three complimented each other."
The Huskies will go for the three-game sweep Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
