March 11, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE ย โย Indiana State rebounded in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday night at Husky Ballpark beating 12th-ranked Washington, 5-3, to earn a split in the day's action and take a 2-1 series advantage heading into Sunday's 2:00 p.m. finale.
ย
The Sycamores (7-8) rode the arm of junior pitcher Will Kincanon, who came up one out short of throwing a complete game. Kincanon (1-2) gave up 10 hits, but he also struck out 11 Husky batters on the way to earning the win.
ย
For the second-consecutive game, Washington (8-6) jumped on the board in the first inning thanks to senior first baseman John Naff coming up with a clutch two-out hit. MJ Hubbs reached on an infield single, stole second and came around to score when Naff dumped a double down the left-field line.
ย
Indiana State tied things up in the third on a two-out hit of their own. Clay Dungan singled home Brandt Nowaskie, who reached on a double, to make the score 1-1.
ย
The Sycamores scored twice in the sixth inning to grab their first lead of the double header and chased starter Jordan Jones from the game in the process. Dominic Bifano reached on a dropped fly ball for an error and Dungan followed with a run-scoring double. Chris Ayers doubled home Bifano to make the score 3-1 and end Jones' day.
ย
Jones' final line was solid: six hits, three runs โ two earned โ and two strike outs, but the Huskies could never mount much offensively with the freshman on the hill.
ย
The Huskies closed the gap in their half of the sixth after Jack Meggs scored for the fourth time in the double header. He doubled to start the inning โ his third extra-base hit of the day โ advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Hubbs ground out.
ย
Washington threatened in the eighth, but couldn't push the equalizer across the plate and the Sycamores took advantage in the ninth inning. They padded their lead with a pair of insurance runs on a sacrifice fly and two-out RBI single.
ย
The Huskies mounted a two-out rally in the ninth and eventually sent the tying run to the plate, but ultimately came up short. Josh Cushing reached on a two-out single, took second on indifference and came around to score on a Levi Jordan RBI single.
ย
KJ Brady represented the tying run at the plate but Austin Conway got him to fly out to right field to end the game.
The Huskies outhit the Sycamores, 10-8, but stranded eight runners on the basepaths.
ย
Hubbs, Cushing and Jordan had two hits apiece to lead the Huskies offensive attack.
The Huskies won the first game of the double header, 8-0, behind a complete-game shutout from sophomore Joe Demers.
ย
The teams wrap up the series Sunday with a 2:05 first pitch at Husky Ballpark.
