No. 10 Huskies Explode In 11-1 Win Over St. Maryβs
February 24, 2017 | Baseball
MORAGA, Calif. Β βΒ No. 10 Washington (3-2) exploded for 11 runs in the first four innings, which proved to be plenty for starterΒ Noah Bremer, as he threw six shutout innings and the Huskies routed host St. Mary's, 11-1, Friday at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif.
Β
The Huskies pounded out 14 hits a day after collecting the same amountΒ in a losing effort Thursday.Β MJ HubbsΒ paced UW with three hits in four at bats and collected a career-high tying four RBI's
Β
"It was good to see us bounce back from a tough loss yesterday," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said.
Β
UW dropped the first game of the series 6-5 after having leads of 3-0 and 4-1.
Β
Nine different Huskies picked up hits on the day. Besides Hubbs,Β Kyle LondonΒ (2-for-4),Β Willie MacIverΒ (2-for-4, 3 runs) andΒ John NaffΒ (2-for-3) had multi-hit games.
Β
For the third consecutive game, the Huskies scored in the first inning, this time jumping out to a 4-0 lead before Bremer even toed the rubber. Lead-off hitterΒ AJ GraffaninoΒ got things started by reaching first when first baseman Kevin Milam muffed the throw from second base on a routine grounder. It was the first of three errors on the day for St. Mary's (3-1).
Β
Graffanino took second on an errant pick-off attempt andΒ Jack MeggsΒ sacrificed him down to third.Β Joey MorganΒ grounded out, allowing Graffanino to score and clearing the bases, but that was not the end by any means for the Huskies.
Β
St. Mary's starter Ty Madrigal (0-1) struggled to find his command after getting what should have been the third out of the inning. He walked MacIver and hit Naff to put two runners on base. The next batter, designated hitterΒ Nick Kahle, got ahead in the count 2-0 and smacked the next pitch up the middle for a run-scoring single. Naff moved down to third and Kahle to second on the throw home, setting the table for Hubbs. The Huskies' right fielder took a 2-0 pitch into right-center field for a two-run single and the fourth unearned run of the inning.
Β
"Even though we got up early today, we continued to grind out at bats for nine innings," Meggs said. "Good hitters keep their foot on the gas, and we did that today."Β
Β
Washington added six more runs to its total in the third inning, collecting six hits and sending 10 batters to the plate against three St. Mary's pitchers. Naff, Hubbs and London each singled home a run, and after a wild pitch with the bases loaded scored another run, Graffanino doubled home two more runs to make the score 10-0.
Β
Hubbs picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the fourth inning on a RBI double to make the score 11-0. It was the last time the Huskies scored during the game, but it was plenty of offense for three UW pitchers.
Β
Bremer was able to fight his way through six innings to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out eight and allowed just three hits, but he did walk a career-high tying four batters.
Β
The only times the junior from nearby Berkeley was in trouble were in the fourth and fifth innings, but he was twice able to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam without giving up a run.
Β
St. Mary's broke up the Huskies' shutout in the eighth on a run-scoring sacrifice fly off of relieverΒ Greg Minier.
Β
Minier pitched two innings and freshmanΒ Tommy CostelloΒ pitched a perfect ninth inning in his collegiate debut to shut the door on the Gaels.
Β
"Noah gave us six good innings, and it was good to get Greg some work and let Tommy get his feet wet," said Meggs.
Β
"It was a good day to be a Dawg."
Β
With the four-game series tied 1-1, the Huskies and Gaels will play game three of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
