Washington (2-1) dodged raindrops long enough during its opening weekend to play three games in two days at Santa Clara. The Huskies won twice and lost once, but were unable to get in a scheduled fourth game after being rained out three times over five days.
The Huskies move across the Bay to Moraga where they will be hosted by St. Mary's (2-0) for a four-game series starting Thursday and running through Sunday. All four games will be played in the day.
UW was picked fourth in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll and are ranked in four of five of the major national polls, including a high of 10th in Baseball America's rankings. SERIES HISTORY VS. ST. MARY'S:
The series is just the third between the two teams and the Huskies own a 4-1 advantage. The Huskies and Gaels first played against each other in 1971 and the Huskies won that single game, 9-8. Last year, St. Mary's traveled up to Seattle to face the Huskies, with UW winning 3 of 4 games in the series. St. Mary's won the Friday night opener, 5-3, behind their ace Corbin Burnes, but UW rebounded to win the next three games, including sweeping a Saturday double-header (3-1, 6-1) and shutting out the Gaels in the Sunday finale, 6-0.
QUICK HITTERS:Β
β’ The Huskies rallied for 4 runs in the 9th to beat Santa Clara, 5-2, in the season-opener. It was the first time UW won when trailing after 8 innings since they beat Gonzaga, 11-8, on 4/24/13, scoring 4 in the top of the 9th.
β’ AJ Graffanino has a career high 8-game hit streak that is a continuation of last season.Β
β’ Noah Bremer has allowed 2 or fewer runs in 24 of 32 career starts.
β’ Jack Meggs has made 70 consecutive starts. He also passed the 500 career AB mark last week, most among current Huskies.
β’ Nick Kahle and Jordan Jones had amazing UW debuts. Kahle was 2x4 with a 3-run HR, 2-run double for 5 RBI and Jones struck out 9 and walked 0, with 1 ER to in his first career starts Feb. 19.
WHO ARE THESE HUSKIES:Β
β’ The Huskies are comprised of 17 returners and 18 newcomers. The group of returners includes every starter in the field except 2016 All-Pac-12 third baseman Chris Baker. The pitching staff returns Noah Bremer and Joe DeMers, who combined to make every Friday-Saturday start during the season. The five returning pitchers combined to throw 250.2 out of 511.2 inning from last season. The Huskies do have to replace unanimous All-American Troy Rallings, who was 4-1 with a 0.89 ERA and 16 saves in 2016.
β’ The 18 newcomers are ranked as high as 9th by Baseball America for best recruiting classes. There are three redshirt-freshmen, one junior-college transfer and 14 true freshmen on the Huskies' roster.Β
β’ The Huskies return two players that earned All-Pac-12 honors in 2016: outfielder Jack Meggs and catcher Joey Morgan. Meggs also earned All-Pac-12 Defensive Team honors. Pitcher Noah Bremer, first baseman John Naff and second baseman Levi Jordan each earned honorable mention All-Pac-12.
β’ UW (33-23, 17-13 Pac-12) fought all the way until the end last year, finishing second in the Conference behind champion Utah after dropping the final game of the series on the last day of the season to the Utes. The Huskies earned their 10th all-time NCAA bid and were sent to Nashville, Tenn., where they went 1-2. Their lone win eliminated host Vanderbilt from the tournament.Β
β’ The Huskies are picked to finish 4th in the Pac-12 Conference, according to coaches. Oregon State was picked first, followed by Stanford and Arizona. The Huskies did receive one first-place vote. Nationally the Huskies are ranked in four of the five major polls. The highest ranking they have is 12th by Baseball America.
