Offense Erupts Early Again, UW Downs Gaels, 11-5
February 25, 2017 | Baseball
MORAGA, Calif. – For a second consecutive day, No. 10 Washington (4-2) exploded in the first three innings to take a big lead in an eventual rout of St. Mary's, 11-5, Saturday at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif. to take a 2-1 advantage in the four-game series.
Washington scored four times in the second and five times in the third inning to back starter Joe DeMers (1-1) in his homecoming.
The sophomore from nearby Pleasant Hill, Calif. gave up 10 hits, but only allowed two runs, while striking out two to pick up his first win of the season. DeMers equaled a career-high set in his first start of the season last week versus Santa Clara by throwing seven innings, and like last week, he did not walk a batter.
The Huskies reached double-digits in the hit department for the third-straight game with 13. Joey Morgan, John Naff and Levi Jordan combined to go 9-for-13 at the plate, each collecting three hits.
A day after scoring 10 runs in the first three innings, the Huskies nearly duplicated that feat a day later.
Naff and Nick Kahle singled to start the second and MJ Hubbs reached to load the bases after St. Mary's pitcher Johnny York (0-1) misplayed a sacrifice bunt attempt for an error. Jordan made York pay for the mistake by singling home Naff, and Kyle London added salt to the wound by driving home two more runs on a single to right-center field. AJ Graffanino capped the scoring in the second by chasing home Jordan on a groundout.
The Huskies sent 10 batters to the plate in the third en route to adding five more runs to their already large lead. A MacIver walk, Naff single and an error that allowed Kahle to reach, loaded the bases with no outs for a second-consecutive inning. Hubbs reached on catcher's interference forcing in the first run of the inning and Jordan followed with a RBI single to make the score 6-0.
London drove in his career-high third run of the game with a sacrifice fly and Graffanino followed with a bunt single to extend his personal-best hit streak to 11 games and drive in the eighth run of the game. Morgan singled home Jordan for the fifth and final run of the inning and give the Huskies a 9-0 lead.
St. Mary's (3-2) got single runs back in the fourth and the fifth, but the Huskies negated those runs by scoring in the sixth and seventh innings.
Naff homered in the sixth to give the Huskies their 10th run of the game. For Naff, it was his career-high tying third hit of the game and his first home run of the season. He took a 1-0 offering from Bryce Reichmann deep over the right-center field wall to give the Huskies an eight-run advantage.
Morgan walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to drive in the Huskies' final run of the game and give UW an 11-2 lead.
St. Mary's tried to mount a last-ditch rally in the ninth inning and pushed three runs across the plate before freshman Leo Nierenberg entered the game and squashed the Gaels hopes of a miraculous rally.
The Huskies and Gaels will wrap up the four-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
