Huskies Head to Vegas For South Point Shootout

SEATTLE --- The Huskies head to Nevada to take part in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout at the South Point Arena on Friday and Saturday. Washington opens against Creighton on Friday at 11:00 am then face off against No. 2 Texas on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on KKNW 1150 AM with Gary Hill Jr. on the call. The broadcast will also be streamed on gohuskies.com. South Point Arena provides a video stream which can also be found on gohuskies.com.
Washington is coming off what could be described as a quality loss, falling 85-76 at No. 9 Ohio State on Sunday. Despite going up against the highly-rated Buckeyes which easily dispatched of Pac-12 foe Stanford a week ago, the Huskies played well and trailed by just three with six minutes left.
Scouting the Bluejays
Creighton enters the weekend with a 4-1 overall record after a thrilling 89-78 win in double OT vs. Northern Iowa on Tuesday. The Bluejays' Audrey Faber had 29 points including a running layup as time expired to tie the game and force overtime.
Jaylyn Agnew added 26 points and 14 rebounds in the contest. Faber leads the team in scoring at 18.5 ppg while Agnew adds 15.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg along with six steals and 10 blocks.
Scouting the Longhorns
Texas has opened the season with three dominating wins, outscoring its opponents by an average of 50.7 points per game. The Longhorns have scored at least 95 points in each of their three games and put up 120 on UTSA in their last game before Vegas.
Four Longhorns are averaging in double figures led by senior guard Ariel Atkins, a Preseason All-Big 12 pick. Atkins is averaging 15 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 steals, and 3.7 assists in just 19 minutes per game thus far. Fellow senior guard Brooke McCarty, the 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year, adds 13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
All-Time Series Record
Friday's game against Creighton will be just the second meeting all-time between the two. The Bluejays won the only other game in the series, a matchup in the WNIT Sweet 16 at UW on March. 21, 2004. Creighton held on for a 74-69 victory en route to winning the 2004 WNIT Title.

The Huskies hold a 3-2 edge in the all-time series against Texas, though this will be the first meeting since the 1997-98 season. In that game, Washington used a big second half to pull out a 78-72 win over the Longhorns. The Huskies have won all three games against Texas in Seattle, but have yet to win on the road in the series.

Last Time Out
The Huskies put together a gritty performance and put a scare into No. 9 Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday before falling 85-76. Washington used a 46-40 advantage on the glass–including a 17-12 edge on the offensive boards–to keep things close. The Huskies rallied back from a number of double-digit deficits including digging out of a 17-point, third quarter hole to pull within three with six minutes remaining. However, the Buckeyes would hold on for the victory. Washington received 15 points each from Khayla Rooks and Kierra Collier while Amber Melgoza recorded 10 rebounds and nine points and Fapou Semebene had 10 rebounds including six offensive.
Freshman Power
A pair of freshman are among the top four in scoring while another leads the team in rebounding. Khayla Rooks has impressed throughout the early going, averaging 11.0 points and adding 4.0 rebounds per game. Kierra Collier has provided a spark off the bench, averaging 9.0 points in ust 18.3 minutes a game. Meahwhile, Fapou Semebene is averaging 7.3 rebounds per game with over half of those coming on the offensive end.
Impressive Debuts
Washington had a solid showing from its core of freshman making their collegiate debuts against Idaho State. The Huskies were led in scoring by Kierra Collier, who scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 19 minutes off the bench. Alexis Griggsby added nine points, four rebounds and two steals in 15 minutes with Missy Peterson contributing eight points and two assists. Two freshman cracked the starting lineup for the Huskies with Fapou Semebene and Khayla Rooks each scoring five points and pulling down a team-high five rebounds.
Huskies Ink Talented Duo to NLIs
Washington coach Jody Wynn announced the signing Haley Van Dyke (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo High School) and Tyiona "TT" Watkins (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) to National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period.
Van Dyke, a 6-0 forward, scored the fifth-most points in the state of California last season, pouring in 765 points in 32 games for a 23.9 points per game average. She is ranked 21st among Class of 2018 forwards according to ESPN and ranks as the No. 82 player overall according to Prospects Nation.
Watkins is a 5-11 wing who will wrap up her high school career at Walnut High School in Walnut, Calif., after three seasons at Brea Olinda High School. She is currently ranked as the No. 14 wing player in the class of 2018 by ESPN and No. 20 by Prospects Nation.
First Game Struggles
After the Huskies loss against Idaho State, only three of 11 Washington WBB coaches have won their first game as the Huskies' head coach. The last time a coach won their first game at UW came in 1985-86 when Chris Gobrecht defeated UCLA 68-50 when the Huskies were members of the NorPac Conference. Since UW joined the Pac-10/12, Husky coaches are now 0-5 in their first games at the helm.
No Overtime, Please
Washington has an odd streak going, having played 126-straight games without overtime. The Huskies last overtime game came during the 2013-14 season when UW downed Utah 53-52 on Jan. 17, 2014. Over the last three seasons there have been 44 OT games involving Pac-12 teams with Cal and Stanford each playing six. Overall, UW is 18-18 all-time in overtime contests.
Strength of Schedule
The Huskies are not shying away from playing tough teams in the 2017-18 as Washington faces eight teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25 and another receiving votes. The Pac-12 conference boasts six teams in the AP top 25: (#5 UCLA, #10 Oregon, #14 Stanford, #18 Oregon State, #21 California and #24 Arizona State. USC is also on the list of teams receiving votes outside the top 25. Besides its Pac-12 opponents, the Huskies also square off against #2 Texas and #9 Ohio State in pre-conference games.
Versus The State of Idaho
The Huskies play all three DI programs in Idaho this season. Washington dropped its season opener to Idaho State and travels to face Idaho and Boise State in the Gem State in December. Overall Washington is 29-6 against the three Idaho schools including this year's games and are 19-2 at home.
Huskies Ranked in the Preseason Polls
Washington opens the season ranked tied for No. 25 along with fellow Pac-12 foe California with 79 votes in the USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll and received four votes in the AP Poll.
2016-17 Recap
The Huskies posted a 29-6 record and made their second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016-17. Washington went 18-1 at home and earned a pair of home games to open the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The Huskies downed Montana State and Oklahoma before falling to Mississippi State in the Sweet Sixteen. UW's Kelsey Plum earned numerous honors including the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award as the NCAA Player of the Year before being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft by the San Antonio Stars.
