Senior Night
SEATTLE - The 2017 regular season comes to a close at home this week for the Huskies with two crucial matches as the Dawgs try to take some momentum into the NCAA tournament, while making a strong final impression to the selection committee. Wednesday, in an early 4 p.m. start, the Huskies see Arizona for the first time this season in a "Give Back" night to help raise funds for Puerto Rico's recovery efforts, a cause close to the hearts of UW players, coaches, and alumni. After downing some turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie, Washington will look to down the Cougars on Friday night on Senior Night, where a decorated class of seven seniors will be honored before the match.
The Huskies are tied with Utah for third in the Pac-12 with a 12-6 record, but can still finish second as USC is just one game ahead at 13-5. Stanford secured the conference title last week with a 17-1 mark, the only loss coming to the Huskies two weeks ago. Ranked 12th this week in the AVCA coaches poll, Washington has an RPI of No. 8 in the nation. The NCAA will choose the top 16 seeds this Sunday evening during the selection show at 6 p.m. Pacific time, and those seeds will all host NCAA first and second round matches, something UW has done the past five years, and looks to make it six straight.
On Wednesday, Washington will be partnering with Husky legend Courtney Thompson's Give It Back Foundation to help raise money for Puerto Rico communities devastated by Hurricane Maria. Thompson played several years in Puerto Rico, with 2015 grad Lianna Sybeldon starting her pro career there as well. Puerto Rico native Jenni Nogueras played the past three years back home on the island and lived through the hurricane, and has been working to help rebuild. Messages from the former players as well as Head Coach Keegan Cook will play during the match, and a silent auction will be held with memerobilia from Thompson and Krista Vansant up for bid.ย
Friday night's Senior Night ceremony will honor one of the winningest classes in the history of Husky volleyball. Fifth-year seniors Carly DeHoog, Jade Finau, and Bailey Tanner will be honored along with fourth-year seniors Crissy Jones, Tia Scambray, and Courtney Schwan, as well as senior transfer Marion Hazelwood. The group has captured a pair of Pac-12 titles (three for the fifth-year seniors) and advanced at least to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tourney each year, with Elite Eight trips the past two seasons. The group has a 2014-17 record of 113 wins and 18 losses, an .862 winning percentage and in Alaska Airlines Arena, the senior class has gone 56-7 (.888). Be there this week as they look to add two more wins to those totals.
The Huskies will be meeting the Wildcats for the first time this season on Wednesday due to the unbalanced conference schedule. Last year, the teams faced off three times, including an NCAA Sweet 16 showdown won by the Huskies. While Arizona has had a rough season in just wins and losses, going 10-17 and 4-14 in Pac-12 play, the Wildcats have proven very dangerous of late, upsetting Oregon on Nov. 12, going five sets in a loss at No. 17 USC on Nov. 5, and also going five with Colorado and taking sets off ranked Utah and UCLA squads. Junior Kendra Dahlkeย is an offensive threat, ranking ninth in Pac-12 play in kills with 3.59 per set. Sophomore setter Julia Patterson is sixth with 9.85 assists. A young team,ย Arizona has four freshmen with 60 or-more kills this season (Paige Whipple - 185, Elizabeth Shelton - 174, Candice Denny - 97 and Katie Smoot - 69) for the first time in school history.
The Cougars are fighting for a postseason berth despite dealing with multiple injuries this season. Washington State is 16-14 and has an RPI of 39 entering the final week, typically a "bubble" spot for NCAA inclusion. The Cougars earned a big win this past weekend, upsetting then-No. 20 Oregon in four sets. They lost to Oregon State on Sunday, but won the third set by a stunning 25-6 score. Taylor Mims has been on an offensive roll of late, posting 49 kills on the Oregon road trip. She's now up to 4.31 kills per set in Pac-12 play, which is second in the league. Sophomore Alexis Dirige is third in league play with 4.73 digs per set, and WSU remains one of the best blocking teams in the league, ranking third with 2.79 blocks per set. Middle blocker Ella Lajos is hitting an impressive .332 in league play, while Jocelyn Uriasย averages 1.30 blocks per set. The Huskies won the first meeting in Pullman to open league play in four sets.
