Parish's Brace Gives Washington 2-1 Win In Pac-12 Opener
October 01, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE - Joey Parish netted a brace to help the No. 17-ranked University of Washington come from behind to beat Oregon State 2-1 in its Pac-12 opener on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 7-2-0 with their fifth-straight victory and move to 1-0-0 in conference play. The Beavers fall to 3-6-0 and to 0-1-0 in the Pac-12.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half after a midfield battle through much of the period. Moments into the second half, Oregon State got on the board with a controversal goal early on.
The Beavers were awarded a throw in but a whistle by the referee as the throw-in happened caused many of the players for both teams to stop playing. One player who did not stop playing was OSU's Don Tchilao, who took the thrown-in straight toward net and fired a shot low and past the UW netminder for the early lead.
Washington overcame the deficit quickly, turning up the offensive pressure. Parish, who came on as a halftime substitute, brought the teams level in the 57th minute. Handwalla Bwana started the play, beating a pair of Beaver defenders to the right side of the box where he sent in a cross right in front to Parish, who headed it in easily.
Just seven minutes later, Parish again converted an easy scoring attempt, getting a low cross from Corban Anderson and tapping it home from just in front of the goal mouth to give the Huskies the 2-1 advantage.
Washington's defense would clamp down the rest of the way, though it did allow a pair of quality scoring chances. Oregon State's Jordan Jones had a pair of impressive bicycle kick attempts over the final 15 minutes, one of which hit of the near post and the other which rattled off the cross bar.
Sophomore netminder Saif Kerawala saw his shutout streak come to an end, but still picked up his eighth win of the year, making two saves in the victory.
Washington returns to action on Thursday, hosting San Diego State at 7:00 PM.
