Two Texas Matches Await Huskies This Weekend

SEATTLE – After staying in the Pacific Northwest for the last few weeks, the Washington women's soccer team will travel down to Texas this weekend for matches at Baylor on Friday September 16th and Southern Methodist University on Sunday September 18th.
Last weekend the Huskies (5-1-1) traveled down to Portland for the Nike Portland Invitational, drawing with St. John's 0-0 in their first match, and defeating Southern Utah 3-0 in their second. UW scored all three of their goals against SUU in the second half, with Becca Schoales scoring twice in just over 15 minutes, and freshman Isabella Castro lobbing a long ball off the post and into the back of the net in the 84th minute for her first career goal.
Friday's match against Baylor (5-3) will begin at 5 p.m. PT with the Bears searching for a win after dropping two straight to Samford and Auburn. They are led by sophomore Lauren Piercy, who has already notched five goals and recorded one assist, scoring twice against Purdue in a 5-1 win on August 26th.
From Waco, Texas the Huskies will make the short trip north to Dallas to face SMU (4-2) on Sunday at 5 p.m. PT. The Mustangs opened up the season with two shutout wins against Rice and Northwestern State, scoring 17 goals between the two games. After going 2-1 in matches against Butler, Indiana and 7th ranked BYU, SMU's offense broke open again with a 6-1 win over Abilene Christian. They will play Saint Louis on Friday before facing Washington.
Freshman Allie Thornton leads the Mustangs in shots (20) and goals (7) and is tied for third in the country with a 1.17 goals per game average. Thornton scored two goals in each of SMU's first two games, and earned a hat trick against Abilene Christian.
The team also announced the winners of the offensive and defensive MVP's from the Husky Invitational this week, with both winners coming from UW. Shannon Simon was the winner of the offensive MVP after scoring two goals, one against Cal Poly and a game-winner against Seattle on a penalty kick. The defensive MVP went to goalkeeper Sarah Shimer who had two shutouts in both games for the Dawgs, collecting six saves.
