Dawgs Fall To Baylor 2-0 In Tough Road Match
September 16, 2016 | Women's Soccer
WACO, Texas โ After falling behind Baylor in the 30th minute, the Washington women's soccer team was unable to battle back, falling 2-0 to the Bears at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
"It was a game that we knew was going to be a tough physical match," said Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore. "They have tough kids up front and they make it difficult for you, we had to weather that and in the first half I thought we did that fairly well."
To start the match Baylor took the first five shots and two corners. In the 30th minute, the Huskies had a chance on goal off of a free kick and tried to serve it back in, but left the ball short. Baylor was able to score on a breakaway that snuck through Kaylyn Smith's legs to give Baylor the 1-0 lead.
"The first goal of the game came off of a mistake by us," said Gallimore. "That was disappointing."
Junior Kimberly Keever took the first two shots of the match for the Dawgs, with her first shot resulting in a save and her second going wide right of the goal.
In the second period Baylor came out pressing on offense again, taking the first three shots of the half before putting a second one in the back of the net to grab a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.
"They got a cross in from our left side and hit an easy header," said Gallimore. "When you find yourself down two to nothing you have to press and the game becomes a little one dimensional."
With the Huskies searching for a score, Paige Serwold sent a header at the goal that was saved by the Baylor keeper in the 56th minute, and Dominique Bond-Flasza took a shot that went to the left of the goal.
"A lot of players on our team showed they could battle tonight and I was proud of that," said Gallimore. "We learned a lot about mental toughness and playing uncomfortable. We knew we had a challenge on our hands, and we just lost that challenge."
After dropping tonight's match the Huskies will carry a 5-2-1 record up to Dallas for a Sunday matchup with SMU at 5 p.m. The match will have a live stream and stats page, and can also be followed by checking out our Twitter page @UW_WSoccer.
