Huskies Pound Out 15 Hits, Beat Seattle U, 12-4
April 14, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Every Husky starter had at least one hit as Washington beat Seattle University, 12-4, in non-league baseball action Wednesday at Husky Ballpark.
Center fielder Jack Meggs (3 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI) had a season-high three hits to lead the Huskies' (17-11) offensive attack in which they pounded out 15 total hits and had several big innings – scoring four runs in the second and five in the fourth.
Kyle London (2 for 3, 2B), MJ Hubbs (2 for 3, 2B, 3 RBI) and Joey Morgan (2 for 4, RBI) also had multiple hits for the Huskies.
The loss dropped the WAC-leading Redhawks to 20-11 on the season.
Washington scored four times in the second to jump ahead of Seattle U early and end the day for starting pitcher Tyler Oldenburg (1-2). Gage Matuszak got the scoring started with a two-run homer to right field, that also scored Duncan Hendrickson, who reached ahead of him on a lead-off walk. It was Matuszak's fourth homer of the year.
Chris Baker followed with a single and Oldenburg's day was done, but the Huskies were not finished putting up runs on the board. After an out, London put two on base with a bunt single and Meggs followed with a ringing RBI double to right field off reliever Grant Gunning. The next batter Hubbs made it 4-0 with a RBI single to left field.
The Huskies did not enjoy their four-run advantage for long as Seattle U answered right back in the third inning, scoring three times. Brock Carpenter hit a two-out, bases-loaded double off UW starter Ryan Schmitten to right field that scored all three runners.
But, Washington responded by batting around and scoring five runs in the fourth to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The first two Huskies were retired to start the inning before the top of the order started a two-out rally.
London doubled and Meggs followed with a RBI single. Hubbs hit a tricky-hop double that bounced behind the third baseman and into shallow left field scoring Meggs. Josh Cushing walked and Joey Morgan followed with a single up the middle to make the score 7-3. After a balk, Hendrickson capped the scoring with a two-run single.
The Huskies added two more runs in the sixth and another run in the seventh to reach double digits for the third time this season. Cushing had a RBI double in the sixth and Hendrickson drove in his career-high third run on a fielder's choice ground out.
Hubbs capped the scoring for the Huskies with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. It was his third RBI of the night.
Seattle's Chase Ridder homered in the seventh to account for the Redhawks' fourth run.
Greg Minier entered the game in relief in the fourth and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a hit, to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.
Washington continues Pac-12 play this weekend with a three-game series against UCLA starting Friday at 7 p.m. The first two games of the series will be telecast by the Pac-12 Network.
