Bremer Throws Complete Game Gem, But UW Falls, 1-0
April 16, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington pitcher Noah Bremer allowed just one run and pitched his first career complete game, but his counterpart, UCLA starter Griffin Canning, threw a six-hit complete-game shutout to lead the visiting Bruins to a 1-0 victory at Husky Ballpark Friday night.
It marked just the second time this season that the Huskies (17-12, 7-6 Pac-12) have been shutout and it was the second shutout this year hurled by UCLA (15-16, 6-7).
Bremer (4-2) threw 115 pitches over his nine innings of work and was on all night. He gave up six hits, walked two and struck out two, and allowed UCLA runners to reach third base in only two innings.
But Canning matched him all night and benefited from a sixth inning run to take the lead. The Bruins loaded the bases on a pair of hits sandwiched around an intentional walk and cleanup hitter Eric Filia drove in the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Huskies had several chances against the Bruins, but came up empty each time. Canning allowed Husky baserunners to reach second in five innings, but kept UW hitters off-balance all night with a nasty curve, mixed in with pinpoint fastballs. He struck out 10 batters on 126 pitches, walked only one.
Husky baserunners reached third base in just two innings – Chris Baker in the fifth and AJ Graffanino in the eighth. Each time it was with two outs, and both times Canning got the final out of the inning to retire the side.
Baker and catcher Joey Morgan each had two hits for Washington.
The two teams continue the series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
