SEATTLE - Alaska Airlines Arena will be the site of a de facto Pac-12 title match this Wednesday night, as the first-place Huskies and Bruins meet for the first and only time this season in the penultimate regular season match for both squads. Seventh-ranked Washington and eighth-ranked UCLA come into the match with 14-4 records, so the winner of Wednesday's showdown, starting at 7:00 and airing on Pac-12 Networks, will clinch a share of the Pac-12 title. The Huskies will then close out the regular season with a big challenge in Pullman against the 25th-ranked Cougars on Saturday, Nov. 26, in the aftermath of the Apple Cup. Saturday's match against WSU starts at 2 p.m. Both matches will be live on Pac-12 Networks, Saturday's only on Pac-12 Washington.
Due to the unbalanced conference schedule, the Huskies and Bruins were scheduled to play just once this season, and it just so happens that the conference title will be on the line. Regardless of the outcome Wednesday, only a share will be clinched for one team, as a tie in the final standings would still result in co-champions regardless of one team owning the 1-0 head-to-head advantage. Stanford is the third team still in the race for the title, as the Cardinal sit one game back at 13-5, but Stanford can only share the title if it goes 2-0 and then Wednesday night's winner goes on to lose its season finale. A win on Wednesday would give the Huskies their third Pac-12 title in the past four years, and fifth all-time.
With the regular season wrapping up on Saturday, attention will turn to the NCAA Selection Show which is set for this Sunday at 6 p.m. PT on ESPNU. Washington is expected to make a 15th consecutive NCAA tournament and can host first and second rounds if it is selected as one of the 16 seeded teams. The Huskies are ranked seventh in the AVCA coaches poll this week and No. 11 in the RPI.
UCLA comes into Wednesday's match having won 11 of its last 12 matches. The only loss during that stretch came at Arizona in straight sets. UCLA also lost at home to Arizona and Washington State, and at Colorado, but the Bruins swept the season series with Stanford including a big 3-2 win in Palo Alto on Nov. 12 and a 3-1 win in L.A. over Oregon in its most recent match. UCLA has talented seniors at several positions, including defending Pac-12 Libero of the Year Taylor Formico who leads the Pac-12 with 5.15 digs per set. UCLA has nearly two digs per set more than the next best team in the Pac-12, averaging 17.86. The Bruins have two senior middles, Jennie Frager and Claire Felix, and both are in the top-10 in attack percentage. Frager ranks third in the league with a .365 mark, and leads the team with 1.15 blocks per set, and Felix ranks eighth with a .332 attack percentage. One of UCLA's top outsides is also a senior, in Jordan Anderson, as she is tied for the team lead with 3.18 kills per set, tied with junior Reily Buechler. Freshman Torrey Van Winden has been one of the best hitters in the league during conference play, she leads UCLA in Pac-12 matches with 3.16 kills per set, hitting .304.
The Cougars gave the Huskies their first loss of the season in the Pac-12 opener, and beat UW for the first time since 2009. Washington State started the Pac-12 season 5-0 but then lost seven of its next nine before coming back with wins in three of its past four matches to go to 10-8 in league play. With a 20-10 record, WSU has its most wins since the 2002 season, and is trying to secure an NCAA tourney bid. The Cougars are led by senior Kyra Holt who will be playing her final home match Saturday. Holt is sixth in the Pac-12 with 3.73 kills per set and also seventh in aces with 0.24 per set. Washington State still leads the NCAA in blocks per set with 3.34, as Taylor Mims ranks sixth in the NCAA with 1.54 blocks and Claire Martin has 1.46 to rank 12th. The blocks help WSU lead the Pac-12 in opponent hitting percentage, as they limit teams to .186 in Pac-12 play, while hitting .192 themselves.
