Washington Edges Cal In Overtime

BERKELEY, CALIF. -- A slow start for the Huskies resulted in a 2-1 win in overtime over the California Golden Bears, Thursday afternoon.
The first half consisted of back-and-forth possession of the ball as both teams were unable to convert their shots into goals.
Washington had six shots in the first half, half of them on goal. Goalkeeper Auden Schilder kept the Bears off the board as well, recording three saves.
Four minutes into the second half, Kyle Coffee took advantage of a mistake on the Bears. Cal gave up the ball, Coffee stepped into the box and found the back of the net to get the Purple and Gold on the board.
The 70th minute marked a change of pass for the match. The Bears pressured th Huskies in the back, causing chaos in the net multiple times. In the 72nd minute the Bears snuck the ball past Schilder, tying the score at 1-1. The goal came from freshman, Simon Lekressner.
Unable to break the tie in regulation, the Huskies headed into overtime.
The Bears started the overtime quickly with a shot from the top of the box but it was deflected by Schilder.
The match looked like it was going to head into the second overtime, but in the final minute Henry Wingo attempted to net the ball but was deflected by the goalkeeper. Off the rebound David Coly stepped into the goal box and tapped the ball into the net, ending the match in the 99th minute at 2-1, Huskies.
Three California players were issued yellow cards in the match.
The Dawgs recorded 13 shots on Thursday. Coffee and Coly, the goal scorers, led the team with three each. Garret Jackson and Joey Parish each had two and Elijah Rice, Henry Wingo and Justin Fiddes each tallied one.
Schilder had seven saves on the night, allowing only one goal.
The final road trip of the regular season continues as the Huskies face Stanford on Sunday. The match will kick-off at 5 p.m. Fans can catch the Dawgs in action at home next Thursday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. when they host UCLA.
