STANFORD, Calif. – Washington dropped to .500 in conference, falling on the road at Stanford, 82-69. The Dawgs (16-6, 5-5) trailed by as many as 21 to the hot-shooting Cardinal (17-5, 9-1) who shot 50 percent in the first half, but rallied to get within six in the second half, before Stanford pulled away.
Aminah Williams led the Dawgs with a big night, totaling 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The Dawgs jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but that was short-lived as Stanford reeled off a 10-2 run to take the lead and would not trail again. The Cardinal made seven 3-pointers in the first half, shooting an even 50 percent from the floor. They also forced seven Washington turnovers and turned that into 13 points.
Williams led the Huskies in the half, nearly totaling a double-double before the break. She scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds on 5-6 shooting. Each of Williams' hoops was right underneath the basket as her teammates found her in good spots.
Jazmine Davis added nine points in the half, including one of the three 3-pointers the Dawgs made in the first period.
After the break, the Dawgs looked like a new team, opening with a 6-1 run on 3-pointers from Brianna Ruiz and Davis. Washington would continue to chip away at the lead as Ruiz caught fire from beyond the arc. The redshirt freshman made three triples early in the half as Washington pulled to within eight with 13:16 to play.
After a mini run from the Cardinal, Washington would pull to within six at the 9:22 mark as Kelsey Plum scored a layup in transition. The Dawgs could not get closer, however, as a Ruiz 3-ball popped out with a chance to get within three.
Instead, the Cardinal extended the lead back out, using a 9-0 run and the Dawgs would not get it back within single digits.
Williams led four Huskies in double figures as Davis finished with 16, Ruiz had 12 and Walton 11. Plum was held to single digits for the first time all season, scoring eight, but did contribute seven rebounds and seven assists. For the game, Washington outrebounded the Cardinal, 39-36.
Both teams shot 10-28 from 3-point range as Ruiz made 4-7 to lead the Dawgs.
Next up the Dawgs will return to Alaska Airlines Arena for another tough weekend. Washington will host the Oregon schools, beginning with No. 7 Oregon State who is a perfect 10-0 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies and Beavers will tip at 7 p.m. on Friday night, while Sunday at 6 p.m. the Oregon Ducks come to town at just 3-7 in conference, but riding high after a weekend sweep of UCLA and USC.
