SEATTLE – On a day that honored the brilliant careers of Husky seniors Jazmine Davis and Aminah Williams, the Dawgs took care of business, downing UCLA, 74-61. The win moved the Huskies to 22-8 on the season and 11-7 in Pac-12 play.
Williams and Davis led five Huskies in double figures as Washington pulled away from UCLA in the second half. The win was the 22nd of the season, which is the most since the 2002-03 squad won that same number.
Washington jumped to an early lead, scoring the first seven points of the game as the Dawgs held UCLA scores for the opening 6:47. The Bruins would fight back and get as close as one, but never take the lead.
Kelsey Plum scored 11 first-half points, but it was the Husky defense that made the difference. Washington forced 13 UCLA turnovers and the Bruins to 12-30 from the floor. The Dawgs struggled from the 3-point line, making just 2-11 to keep things close. The Huskies lead was just 34-30 at the break as Williams closed the half with a steal and layup just before the buzzer.
After the break, the Dawgs slowly pulled away from the Bruins, led by Williams who finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Davis was more the facilitator, dishing out five assists to go with her 12 points.
Plum finished with a team-high 22 points, while also dishing out four assists and notching four steals. Talia Walton and Chantel Osahor were the other Huskies in double figures with 11 points each.
As a team, Washington shot 41.7 percent, including 4-8 from beyond the 3-point arc in the second half. The Dawgs also forced 19 UCLA turnovers to help make up for being outrebounded, 45-40.
In addition to Williams' double-double, Walton nearly had one of her own, finishing with nine boards. Walton also blocked two shots to become the new all-time leading shot blocker in Husky history with 145.
The accolades for Davis continued to grow as she became the ninth player in Pac-12 history to surpass 2,200 career points. The Husky senior will enter postseason with 2,210 for her career as she continues to climb the list of conference greats.
Williams is now up to 1,114 rebounds as she also continues to climb the Pac-12 list. She is now 14th all-time.
Next up for the Huskies will be the Pac-12 Tournament, which begins Thursday, March 5 at KeyArena. The Dawgs will be the fifth seed and play the No. 12 seed, which will be either Utah or Arizona. Game time is to be announced, but is expected to be the late game.
