SEATTLE – It took until late, but Washington eventually pulled away from Utah, winning 75-64, to advance at the Pac-12 Tournament. The Dawgs (23-8, 11-7) got 29 points from Jazmine Davis and will move on to face fourth-seeded California in Friday night's second round.
Davis was a difference maker, scoring 18 points in the second half to will the Huskies back from a six-point halftime deficit.
The Huskies dug an early hole, falling behind, 7-0 and then 14-7 as the Utes were hot from beyond the 3-point line. Washington responded with an 12-0 run, sparked by the defense of Aminah Williams, leading to points in transition.
The Dawgs lead would not last long, however, as Utah came right back to go up by as many as seven and lead 34-28 at the break. The Utes outrebounded the Huskies 20-14 in the half and held Washington to just 37.5 percent shooting.
After the break, Davis went into takeover mode, scoring the first six points of the half to tie up the score. From there, the Husky senior began to open things up for her teammates as the Dawgs shot 55 percent in the half.
Kelsey Plum also had a big half, scoring 17 of her 23 after the break. She finished 7-15 from the floor, 2-4 from 3-point range and 7-8 from the foul line. It was her backcourt mate that outdid her, though, making 10-21 from the floor and 9-10 from the foul line for her season-best 29 points.
The Dawgs didn't take the lead for good until midway through the second half and Utah got within three with 3:21 to play, before Plum scored seven-straight points. Her 3-pointer with 1:09 to go put Washington up 10 and ended any chance of the Utah comeback.
For the game, Washington shot 47.2 percent, while only committing four turnovers to 12 for Utah.
In addition to the 52 points from the Husky backcourt, Williams, Talia Walton and Brianna Ruiz each chipped in seven points apiece. Williams also added a team-high 11 rebounds and three steals.
The Dawgs advance to face California on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. at KeyArena. The fourth-seeded Bears had a bye in the first round and split the season series with Washington this year. The game will be live on the Pac-12 Networks with Krista Blunk and Mary Murphy on the call.
