BOULDER, Colo. – Washington got back on track, earning the weekend split in the Rocky Mountains, defeating Colorado, 80-67. The Dawgs (19-7, 7-6) rebounded from a disappointing loss at Utah with a team win to defeat the Buffaloes (11-14, 4-10), despite being shorthanded.
Kelsey Plum led the Dawgs with 28 points, including finishing a perfect 10-10 from the foul line, but it was a career night from Chantel Osahor that made the difference. Osahor played 35 minutes while earning the start with Talia Walton out with a banged up knee. She scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked two shots to come up huge for a team that needed a lift.
It was a true team effort as Jazmine Davis and Aminah Williams each finished with 13 points and Khalia Lark came off the bench to play a career-high 26 points and score nine points. Mathilde Gilling also played a key defensive role, subbing offense for defense late in the game for Davis who had four fouls. Gilling finished with two blocked shots to help secure the victory.
Washington put its slow start at Utah in the review mirror, jumping all over Colorado in the opening minutes. Davis' pullup jumper punctuated a 16-2 run to start the game. Plum had the hot hand early, making two 3-pointers in the early run and finishing with three in the half.
The Buffaloes would make their run late in the half, pulling within three points with 3:38 to go. The Dawgs responded in a big way, however, ending the half on a 10-0 run to lead 41-28 at the break. Lark came off the bench to score five big points during the run as Davis sat with three fouls.
Washington continued to extend the lead after the half as they looked to run away with the game. The Dawgs led by 21 just over five minutes in as they repeatedly got to the foul line and converted. For the game, the Huskies converted 32 of 37 as they showed why they lead the Pac-12 in both free throws made and percentage.
The Buffaloes would not go away, making another run to pull within 10 points with 8:02 to play. The Huskies again responded, this time scoring a big basket on an inbounds play where Lark found Williams for a layup.
The Huskies would extend the lead from there and never allow Colorado to get within double digits thanks to flawless free-throw shooting down the stretch.
Washington finished by shooting 37 percent for the game, but made 17 more free throws and five more 3-pointers than Colorado. The Dawgs also took care of the ball, committing just seven turnovers. The Buffaloes won the battle on the glass, 44-37, despite a team-best nine boards from Williams.
Plum set a Pac-12 record in the game, having now made 34 consecutive free throws. The old record was 33 by Erica Mashia of USC way back in 1996.
Davis also reached a milestone as she continued to her ascent of the Pac-12 all-time scoring list. The senior guard passed Ashley Walker of California into ninth place on the list, now has 2,149 points during her illustrious career.
Next up for Washington is a home and home with archrival Washington State. The Dawgs host the Cougars on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., before traveling to Pullman for a 1 p.m. tip on Sunday afternoon. Both games will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
