SEATTLE – It was a game of runs and unfortunately for Washington it was Washington State that made the most substantial effort, pouring it on in the second to win, 83-72. The Dawgs (19-8, 8-7) made a spirited comeback in the first half, coming from a 13-point deficit to take a five-point halftime lead, but the Cougars (15-11, 6-9) would turn the tables in the second half.
The Dawgs were led by Jazmine Davis who scored 23 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out six assists. Kelsey Plum added 18, while Talia Walton came off the bench to score 14.
Davis was nothing short of extraordinary in the first half, scoring 17 points on 5-8 shooting, including 1-1 from 3-point range and 6-6 from the foul line. She also added seven rebounds and three assists before the break. The half did not get off to a good start as the Cougars raced to a 19-6 lead as Washington was slow out of the gate.
Davis was the difference maker, putting the Huskies on her back with lightning-quick drives to the hoop and hitting the glass for some big defensive rebounds. With Davis awakening the Husky attack, her teammates got in the act. Chantel Osahor scored three times in the post, while Walton made her return off the bench to knock down three jumpers.
After slowly chipping away at the lead, the Huskies closed on an 11-0 run to take a 38-33 lead to the break. Davis and Plum each knocked down 3-pointers during the run to help the Dawgs turn around the game.
The second half was a completely different story, however. Washington State began with a 23-9 run over the first eight minutes and would not look back. The Cougars shot 55.6 percent after the break, including 6-13 from beyond the 3-point arc.
At one point, Wazzu made four straight from deep to build a 17-point lead and crush the Husky comeback attempt. The Cougars would lead by as many as 22, before the Dawgs closed strong to finish with a margin of just 11.
The Huskies were beaten on the boards, 40-34, while also turning it over 14 times to just 10 from the Cougars. Washington State finished by shooting 46.5 percent for the game, while Washington was at 42.1 percent.
Washington and Washington State won't wait long for the rematch as the two teams play again on Sunday in Pullman. The Dawgs will look to avenge the loss with a 1 p.m. tip in the Palouse for a game broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
