November 10, 2015 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – For the second week in a row, senior libero Cassie Strickland was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week following No. 3 Washington's two road sweeps in the desert last weekend. The weekly win is the fourth for Strickland in her career and the fifth time UW has won the Defensive award this season out of 11 weeks.
The reigning Pac-12 Libero of the Year, Strickland helped pave the way for the Huskies to take down 20th-ranked Arizona State and 19th-ranked Arizona State to improve to 22-2 on the year. Strickland averaged 6.33 digs per set in the wins and helped Washington's defense hold the two teams to a combined .122 attack percentage, while her sharp passing kept UW in system to hit .299 for the weekend.
Strickland had a pair of aces and 18 digs against the Sun Devils, then topped that with three aces and 20 digs against the Wildcats, both in just three sets. The five aces on the weekend gave Strickland 142 for her career, tying her for third in Washington history, and she also passed 1,400 career digs on Sunday, as she ranks fourth in UW history in that category.
Washington leads the Pac-12 in Defensive Player of the Week honors since the award was added in 2011, now with 17 wins.
Washington improved to 12-2 in conference and hosts No. 6 Stanford on Thursday in a meeting between the second and third-place teams in the Pac-12 standings.
