BERKELEY, Calif. – The Dawgs couldn't make it a season sweep, falling on the road at California, 82-58. The Golden Bears (15-5, 7-2) jumped out to an early lead and never trailed, despite a comeback effort from the Dawgs (16-5, 5-4) at the end of the first half.
The loss came after the Dawgs defeated California earlier this month in Seattle, 79-77. Friday was a much different outcome as the Golden Bears outplayed Washington from the opening tip. The loss was the biggest margin of the Mike Neighbors era and largest since March 2, 2013, when the Dawgs fell by 28 also to California.
Cal was up big early on, scoring the first eight points and leading by 17, 25-8, midway through the half. The Dawgs would respond, slowly chipping away at the lead to make it just 10, 36-26 at the break.
Washington shot just 9-26 for the period, but did make four 3-pointers, to stay in the game. Cal dominated the Dawgs on the glass with a 22-14 margin, while shooting 12-29. The Bears also forced the Huskies into eight turnovers with a halfcourt trap.
Jazmine Davis led Washington with 10 points at the break, making 4-9 and 2-4 from 3-point range. Talia Walton added nine points, playing through pain after missing one game with an ankle injury.
After the break, Cal quickly regained the momentum and the Dawgs never got close again. The Bears outscored Washington 46-32 in the half as the Huskies allowed 59.4 percent shooting. The Bears opened the half on a 14-4 run to lead by 20 and pushed the margin to as many as 34 in the period.
Kelsey Plum scored 12 after the break to finish with 17, but it was too little too late. Davis led the Dawgs in scoring with 19, while Walton added 13. Washington shot just 20-58 (34.5 percent) for the game, while being outrebounded, 42-30.
Aminah Williams led the Huskies with eight boards, while Plum had a team-leading three assists.
Washington will complete the Bay Area roadtrip on Monday night in Palo Alto against Stanford. The Dawgs fell in a tightly contested battle in Seattle earlier this month. The rematch will tip at 7 p.m. live on the Pac-12 Networks.
