TEMPE, Ariz. – Five days after upsetting No. 5 Texas A&M, the Dawgs could not make it two in a row over a ranked opponent, falling to No. 22 Arizona State, 62-48. The loss ended Washington's 11-game winning streak, dropping the Dawgs to 0-1 in Pac-12 play.
It was a tale of two halves as the Dawgs trailed by 24 at the break. Washington responded in the second half, but it was too little too late. Arizona State held Washington to a season-low 48 points and forced 24 Husky turnovers.
The Dawgs also made just one 3-pointer in the game, finishing 1-14 from behind the arc. Brianna Ruiz made the only 3-pointer, the first Husky basket of the game to give Washington a 3-2 lead.
Kelsey Plum led Washington with 17 points, but was the only Dawg in double figures. The Huskies attempted a season-low 45 shots as the turnovers slowed down an offense that came in averaging over 83 points per game.
The Sun Devils jumped all over the Huskies early on, building a 37-13 halftime lead. Arizona State used pressure defense the forced the Dawgs into 16 first-half turnovers. The Dawgs attempted just 20 field goals, making six, both season lows for a half.
Arizona State shot 15-37 in the half, earning decidedly more opportunities due to the turnovers and by outrebounding the Huskies, 23-14 in the period. The Dawgs ended the half on a scoring drought of 8:43 as they struggled to ever find a rhythm.
After the break, Washington cleaned things up, but deficit was too big for a serious comeback attempt. The Dawgs shot 52 percent (13-25) in the half, while holding ASU to 29.6 percent (8-27).
Still, the final score was closer than the game as Ruiz completed a three-point play in the final seconds to cut the margin to 14, the closest it had been since early in the first half.
Jazmine Davis finished with nine points, while Ruiz had eight and Talia Walton had six. Aminah Williams ripped down 11 rebounds as the Huskies responded in the second half to finish down only two in the rebound margin. Chantel Osahor added seven rebounds in just 19 minutes, playing in front of a large group of family and friends in her hometown of Phoenix.
The Dawgs will continue Pac-12 play in the desert on Monday with a trip to Tucson to face Arizona. Washington will look to begin another winning streak against the Wildcats for a 5 p.m., PT tip for a game broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
