TUCSON, Ariz. – Washington earned the split in the desert, beating Arizona 79-69 on Monday night to earn their first Pac-12 victory of the season. The Dawgs (12-2, 1-1 Pac-12) got a season-best 27 points from Jazmine Davis, while Talia Walton and Aminah Williams each had a double-double.
Davis had 17 points in the second half to lead the Dawgs to victory. Washington led by as many as 22 after the break, but the Wildcats made a run to cut it to six, before UW pulled away.
The Wildcats attempted to take Kelsey Plum out of the game by face-guarding the nation's leading scorer for most of the game. Plum finished with 14 points, well below her season average, but it opened things up for her teammates.
Washington got off to a hot start from the outside with Walton knocking down three 3-pointers in the first 4:06 as the Dawgs opened 4-5 from beyond the arc. Arizona was able to keep things close until the final two minutes of the half when the Huskies pushed the lead to double digits. Chantel Osahor scored a pair of hoops to close the half with the Dawgs leading, 38-25.
Walton was huge for the Huskies in the half, finishing with 15 points on 6-10 shooting.
After the break, Washington stormed to a big lead with a 10-3 run to start the half. Williams was active grabbing offensive rebounds and scoring under the hoop. She finished with 10 points after not scoring in the first half.
The Dawgs largest lead of 22 came at the 15:07 mark as Davis made one of her four 3-pointers on the night. It appeared that the Huskies would win it going away, but the Wildcats started a run at the 11:28 mark. Arizona scored 13-straight points, before Plum got in the lane to complete a 3-point play.
The teams traded baskets much of the rest of the way, but Washington never let the Wildcats closer than six points. Washington iced the game at the free throw line, making 22 of 27 (81.5 percent).
The Dawgs finished shooting 39.7 percent (25-63), struggling from beyond the arc after a hot start. The Dawgs made just 7-25 for the game after opening 4-5 from deep.
The Huskies won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Arizona, 44-42. Williams and Walton each had 12 rebounds, while Osahor had seven. Osahor also added a career-best four assists.
The Dawgs will now return home to face No. 15 Stanford and California for their first Pac-12 weekend at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Cardinal come to Seattle on Friday night at 7 p.m. and the Golden Bears Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
