CORVALLIS, Ore. – Washington stayed with the No. 9 team in the country in a competitive back and forth game, but eventually fell to Oregon State, 75-67. Trailing by as many as eight in the second half, the Dawgs rallied to take a late lead, but could not hold off the final Beavers surge.
Talia Walton led the Huskies with 22 points, including making five from the 3-point line. Both teams made 11 from beyond the arc in a shootout between the top-two 3-point shooting teams in the Pac-12.
Washington (14-4, 3-3 Pac-12) used an 13-2 run from the 8:34 mark to the 6:26 mark of the second half to turn an eight-point deficit into a three-point lead. Oregon State (17-1, 6-0 Pac-12) battled back to retake the lead with 3:56 to play and would not trail again.
Four Huskies finished in double figures as aside from Walton, Jazmine Davis had 15, Aminah Williams had 13 and Kelsey Plum, 10. Davis is now just five points shy of tying Jamie Redd's all-time Husky scoring record. Plum had an uncharacteristic off shooting night, making just 3-16 from the floor.
The offense finished 22-67 from the field, playing one of the top defensive teams in the country. Still, the Dawgs had their opportunities finishing with just seven turnovers and outscoring Oregon State 15-6 in transition.
Both Williams and Walton made big 3-pointers as part of the Husky run to retake the lead late in the second half. Chantel Osahor also had four big points, but the Dawgs could not get their shots to fall over the final four minutes, despite some good looks.
The first half featured runs from both teams. After falling behind 4-0, the Dawgs used an 11-3 run to take a four-point lead. That would be the largest Husky lead as the teams went back and forth until Oregon State used an 8-0 run to lead by nine with 3:14 to play. The Huskies closed well, scoring the last five points to finish the half down, 34-30.
The Dawgs were led by Walton who had 14 before the break. She knocked down 4-7 from beyond the arc to keep Washington close.
Williams led the Dawgs with eight rebounds, while Walton and Osahor each added seven. Davis had six assists to go with her 15 points.
The Dawgs will return to Alaska Airlines Arena next weekend to host Colorado (9-8, 2-4) and Utah (6-11, 0-6). Both mountain schools have struggled this season and will be a good chance for the Dawgs to pick up a couple of wins on their home court. UW hosts the Buffaloes on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m., followed by the Utes on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m.
