SEATTLE -- Friday night belonged to Jazmine Davis as the senior guard set the Washington all-time scoring record, before leading the Dawgs on a furious comeback to beat Colorado 85-82 at Alaska Airlines Arena. Davis scored 25 points, added six assists on the night she surpassed Jamie Redd atop the all-time scoring list.
The San Jose, Calif. native that was recruited to only one Pac-12 school – Washington, entered the game needing just six points to put her name atop the record book. She didn't waste any time, making a jumper, a 3-pointer and a free throw in the early going . Davis got to the line at the 13:32 mark of the first half and after missing the first, knocked down her second to surpass Redd.
Davis finished the first half with eight points, while teammates Talia Walton and Kelsey Plum had 11 each. The Dawgs trailed 42-35 and were down as many as 11 in the period. Washington struggled on the glass in the first half as the Colorado had a 23-19 rebounding edge, including 10 on the offensive end.
After the break, Washington came out with renewed energy, immediately cutting into the Colorado lead. Walton was unstoppable, making her first four 3-pointers and finishing with 18 points. Down seven at the half, the Dawgs had regained the lead by the first media timeout, using a 15-3 run.
Colorado did not go away, however, as the contest became a game of runs. By the 10:43 mark, the Buffaloes had regained a double-digit lead. Seconds later, Walton went down with an ankle injury and would not return.
Things looked bleak, but that is when Davis began to take over. She scored 17 points in the second half, including a big 3-pointer at the 6:10 mark to tie the score at 68-68. Washington retook the lead with 5:39 to play when Aminah Williams knocked down two free throws.
The Huskies clung to a narrow lead over the final minutes with the Buffaloes cutting the lead to a single point on multiple occasions. The Dawgs got a pair of stops when Colorado had a chance to take the lead, leading to another huge 3-pointer from Davis.
The Dawgs called timeout with a 78-77 lead and 1:01 to play. Head coach Mike Neighbors drew up a play that worked to perfection as Plum drove and kicked it out to Davis for a three from the corner. The Buffaloes cut the lead to one again, but the Huskies made enough free throws to pull out a big conference win.
Davis finished 8-19 from the floor and 4-7 from 3-point range, while making 5-9 from the foul line. She now has 2,047 points for her illustrious career, most ever for a Washington player.
Plum finished with 23, while Williams and Chantel Osahor had seven rebound each to lead the Dawgs. Osahor finished with a well-rounded night of nine points, four steals and two assists to go with the seven boards. Washington was even on the glass in the second half and forced 16 Colorado turnovers for the game.
The Dawgs continue the weekend homestand on Sunday when Utah comes to Alaska Airlines Arena. The Utes gave Washington State all they could handle on Friday night in Pullman, but dropped to 0-7 in conference. Tip is set for 11 a.m. for another game broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
