
Dawgs Rout Furman, Win Cancun Challenge

CANCUN, Mexico – Washington nearly shot the lights out in Cancun, making a school-record tying 18 3-pointers in routing Furman, 101-69. The Dawgs needed just 28 attempts to make the 18 threes, shooting an outstanding 64.3 percent from distance.
The Dawgs had eight different players make a 3-pointer led by 5-6 shooting from Jazmine Davis. Brianna Ruiz added 4-6 from deep, while Talia Walton and Khalia Lark were each a perfect 2-2. Chantel Osahor also had two makes, while Aminah Williams, Kelsey Plum and Alexus Atchley made one apiece.
The 18 threes tied the school record first set back in 2013 in Eugene when Washington also made 18 3's against Oregon. On that afternoon, Kristi Kingma set the individual school record of 11.
The Dawgs were particularly hot in the first half, making 12-16 from 3-point range, including Davis making 5-5. In all, Davis went 8-8 from the floor in the period as the Huskies built a 60-27 lead and she scored 22 points.
Overall, Washington shot 56.5 percent for the game, including a white hot 20-31 (64.5 percent) in the first half. Davis finished 9-12 from the field with 26 points, but four other Huskies were in double figures. Plum had 17 points on 5-11 shooting, while Walton and Ruiz had 14 each. Walton added a team-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Osahor added 10 points for the five Dawgs in double figures.
The Huskies also shared the ball well with Plum notching a season-best six assists and Ruiz earning a career-best five helpers.
The win made the Dawgs a perfect 3-0 in Cancun and improved their overall record to 5-1. Davis was named their tournament MVP, while Plum also earned all-tournament team honors. Davis finished the week with 75 points, 10 assists and 11 steals. She raised her scoring average to 18.8 points a game as the Husky backcourt is now averaging almost 47 points per game.
Furman actually led Saturday's contest 5-0 early on, but the Dawgs responded with a 26-8 run and it was never close again. Davis, who was ill before the game and a last minute decision whether or not she could play, took over, making everything, including a heat-check 3-pointer from about 25 feet.
After the break, she deferred to her teammates that included Ruiz (14 points) and Lark (8 points) earning career highs. Freshman Mackenzie Wieburg also scored her first basket as a Husky on a perfect pass from Davis as Wieburg used a backcut to get open.
The 101 points were a season-high for Washington who has scored at least 80 in every game so far this season. The Dawgs are now averaging 86.5 points per game, while shooting 46 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range.
The Huskies will now have a day off in Cancun after completing the 'business' portion of the trip in grand fashion. They will return to Seattle on Monday and begin to prepare for Seattle U. who they face Thursday night at KeyArena at 7 p.m.
