Game Action
Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson
Opening Statement: "Free throws are something that we need to look at. In a 22 point deficit to the number six team in the country we missed 10 free throws which cannot happen. Our shooting percentage is also something that we need to look at from this game. We had some great looks inside and around the perimeter and we need to finish those. I told the team after the game that we need to get some extra shooting in. I think we are definitely in a better place than we were 12 games ago and we have some pretty solid opponents coming up."
On final score being an indicator of the progress since the loss at Stanford: "At this point we can say `what 77 point loss?' This score indicates where we are against a team of this caliber. We have a full roster we are healthier than we have been and now we have areas where we can control. Having a season low 10 turnovers against a very good defensive team is a great improvement."
On the crowd: "The crowd was awesome. There were times when you could absolutely feel the energy; there were even times when I could not here myself yell because the crowd noise was so great."
On Stanford's second half run: "It looked like we just ran out of gas. That is what we need to learn, we need to learn how to play past a certain point. We need to teach them to play past that point of exhaustion."
If there was a message of redemption before this game: "I think that there was a message in each one of the player's minds. I do not have to remind them of the loss. You all remember the loss and you were not even there to play in the game. I am pretty sure that they remember, and that was one of the reasons we came out so excited to play."
On 11 players having double digit minutes tonight: "We got in foul trouble; in the first 10 seconds of the game we had two fouls. So right away we were playing with two starters on the bench in foul trouble. That is just how games go. When injuries and fouls happen you have to play with what you have. I think everyone gave quality minutes when they played. I thought that Mollie Williams was one of our bright spots off of the bench. I also thought that Liz Lay was very impressive inside."
Freshman Liz Lay:
On Today's Play: "I think i just get wrapped up in the moment and my mind is saying, "Go, go, go" so I go. I didn't think that I was just going to take this for myself. I had to have my team. We're a team and we have to play like a team. It wasn't anything like I have to win the game, just got caught up in the moment."
On Tough Inside Matchup: "I like to bang so it wasn't tough but it was fun. Either them or Cal. Cal was really competitive inside so it's about a tie between them."
Junior Sami Whitcomb:
On Lessons Learned From Game: "We talked a lot going into this game about controlling the things that we can control, whether it be the shots we take or taking care of the ball. Working every time to get the rebound and box people out. I think that we need to focus on competing in those areas each game. We're still not happy with the loss but you see the difference when we do those things that we can at least comepete with a team like Stanford. Working on those little things makes a huge difference and it shows."
On Second Half Slowdown: "As much as we did run out of gas a little bit, I think that it was just getting caught up in the moment offensively for a second and then forgetting that we had to get back on defense. Not getting around fast enough and giving that help just a second too late. Some of it was running out of gas but the other part was just losing focus for a second. They're a great team and they're going to execute when we do that so if we can just get back a little quicker on defense and remember our rotations I think that would improve a lot for us and change the score too."
