Today's attendance of 4,891 fans was a season-high for Washington at Bank of America Arena. The Huskies celebrated National Girls & Women In Sports and Dads & Daughters Day.
Washington's loss to Stanford on Sunday completes the Cardinal season sweep of the Huskies. Washington falls to 14-36 all-time against Stanford, including a 9-14 record at home. The last time the Huskies defeated Stanford was a 77-72 victory in Seattle on Dec. 22, 2005.
Washington trailed Stanford by 7 (31-38) at the end of the first half, a marked improvement from their previous meeting in Palo Alto, where the Cardinal held a 47-point lead (62-15) heading into the break. Washington managed just 2 points in the first 6:50 of the second half however, as the Cardinal expanded their lead to 50-33 courtesy of a 12-2 run.
UW's 31 first-half points were its most in the opening period since ending the half up 37-28 against WSU in Seattle on Jan. 3.
The Huskies forced the Cardinal into 11 turnovers in the first half and 21 total turnovers, and has forced all but one of its opponents into 15 or more turnovers this year, with the exception being No. 1 UConn (14 turnovers).
Washington is 0-6 against ranked opponents this season, with its last win against a ranked opponent coming against then-No. 9 California in Seattle on March 2, 2008. UW also falls to 0-12 when trailing at halftime, and 0-9 when scoring less than 60 points.
Junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb led the Huskies with 16 points, 10 of them coming in the first half. Whitcomb has scored in double-figures in 14 games this season. Whitcomb's 10-12 outing at the free-throw line mark a career high in both free-throws attempted and made, eclipsing her previous best, an 8-9 showing at UCLA on Feb. 10, 2008.
Stanford sophomore guard Jeanette Pohlen led all scorers with a season-high 19 points on 4-7 shooting, with all attempts coming from beyond the three-point arc.
Stanford sophomore forward Kayla Pedersen registered a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, with junior center Jayne Appel falling just one rebound shy of the same feat, contributing 16 points and 9 rebounds.
The Cardinal outrebounded the Huskies 43-29, improving upon their national best +13.2 average rebounding margin.
The Huskies current 10-game losing streak is the worst in school history, with the next longest skid of six games coming during the 1999-2000 season. Their current six-game home losing streak also exceeds their previous longest of all time, with the last time the Huskies lost four straight at home occurring during the 04-05 season.
