Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson
On California: "They are not 3rd in the country for no reason. Every game that we play we want to see where we are as a team, and tonight we played a very good defensive game until the shot went up. You cannot give a very good team 17 offensive rebounds. "
On the first half: "Our rebounding was not bad in the first half. I think that our defense in the first half before the shot went up was solid, but we need to turn around and box out. The first half we played well."
On the concentration of the California defense: "Every game the defense is going to focus on primarily Kristi [Kingma] and Sami [Whitcomb], Sami has been averaging close to 20 points per game over the last couple games. Kristi is going to get a lot of attention because of her scoring arsenal too. They are the two leading scorers on our team so they are going to get the focus of defences. We were trying to get it inside because they are going to get attention and pressure out on the wing. We had some success with it with Liz Lay having 10 points and Mollie Williams having 4 points inside, but we need to score more in the paint."
On this game compared to the game at California: "Yes, I think that we played better this game than the the game at California. Just from a scoring stand point, but I think that the rebounding part was the biggest problem with our game so I think that we had a fairly descent showing here especially for a half. We put our first half together here and our second half together there, and we know that we are going to face them in the Pac-10 tournament. We hope that the thrid time is the charm."
Junior Forward Sami Whitcomb
On whether she felt the defense focused on her: "They were playing really solid defense against me. I don't know that I was necessarily what they were focusing on or not. I definitely felt the pressure from whoever was guarding me for the most part."
On California forward Ashley Walker: "She's really versatile. She can knock down a shot outside, and she's really good inside. She's just so mobile. She's got that spin move and she's really strong. She really does a great job of rebounding; really trying to get position, move bodies. I would just say her aggression rebounding and just her versatility on offense makes her the player she is."
"I think that she does so much for her team and she can score in so many ways that it makes her tough to guard. She does a lot of the little things for them. On defense, her presence inside, it's tough to go against I'm sure for our posts just with her size and her strength as well. I would say that she is one of the better players that we're going to face."
On how the team will bounce back for Stanford: "I think the same way that we've been pretty good at doing throughout the year. We'll let this game sink in for the night and take the lessons we can learn from it, rebounding obviously being one of them. We're going to face another really good rebounding team, and they have solid posts that are their primary scorers. So we're going to have the same game plan I think. So take whatever we can from this game. We have a quick turnaround so we make the changes we need to make, the adjustments we need to make. Not fouling as much. They got a lot of their points in the first half at the free throw line. Making sure that we are rebounding and not giving them those second chance shots. Just bounce back like we've been able to do pretty well for the most part this year."
