Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson
Opening Statement:
"I definitely wish we could have sent our seniors out on a better note, but at least we got one of the games on senior weekend. We are going to try to redeem ourselves on the road going against the Arizona Schools. USC played a solid game. Their zone caused us some problems. We were not able to attack it until right before halftime, and that was really one of the issues that we had on the court. Giving up 17 offensive rebounds was also a problem for us. I think that overall we have some things that we need to learn from this game, but collectively over the games this weekend we can take some positives away."
Is this game disappointing after the emotional win against UCLA?
"I think that more than anything you want to make your last home stand a memorable one, and I think that this last game did not go the way we wanted it to. We will take the win that we had on Friday and we will look and learn from that like it was a win or a loss. We will take this loss and learn from it like we do every other game. We will learn from this game and get ready to go on the road."
On the problems caused by USC's zone:
"We did not start being aggressive until the last media timeout before halftime. With about four minutes ago we started to attack the zone and that is when we were playing our best basketball. We allowed their pressure to slow us down. It was a great game plan by USC because we wanted to attack and they extended their zone to slow us down."
Was there any emotional hangover after the UCLA win?
"I do not think that anyone other than this team wanted to build off of that win more than we did. Unfortunately we did not do it. We did not bring our A+ game today and now we need to find a way to put two wins together to remember what victory feels like. I do not want this team to get caught up in those losses. We are a winning team in our minds, that is what we are telling ourselves and we need to learn to put two games together."
On the different lineups today:
"More than looking ahead to the future it was more players were calling for subs because they were tired and I had not given the girls who had just come out enough time to rest so the lineup needed changing because of that. Or it was a call by myself or the coaching staff that things are not clicking as much as they need to. Mackenzie [Argens] and Liz [Lay] were doing a great job inside and we wanted them in there unfortunately foul trouble got in the way and we had to play other people. I think today more than anything we were just a step slow."
On the Pac-10 Tournament being a home game for USC:
"Basketball is basketball no matter where you are playing it. Our team is not going to look at it as if it is an advantage for any team. Right now we have points to prove and it does not matter if it is played on an outdoor hoop or in the Galen Center."
Junior Sami Whitcomb
On the Southern Cal zone defense:
"I felt it the whole game, I wouldn't say the first half. We knew what type of defense they would play going in, it's the same that they played down (in Los Angeles). It's that zone, that extended zone, but we were prepared for it."
On whether Southern Cal played a different defense against her:
"It felt different. Whether or not they did anything different, I don't know. It definitely felt like there was more attention. I don't know. I felt like I couldn't drive as much and less seemed open."
Junior Sara Mosiman
On playing for the seniors:
"We definitely wanted to send them out with a victory, like last year. That was an awesome feeling. Once we beat UCLA on Friday, we were hoping to get this last one, but we didn't come together. Like Coach said, we were a step slow."
On if the UCLA game was tiring:
"I don't think so. It was kind of a different game plan. We had the same defenses, we wanted to go against them but our intensity wasn't quite there from the get-go and it's hard when you don't start the game with a certain tempo to try and find a spark from somewhere else, like in the middle of the half. We have to come with it right away."
Senior Michelle Augustavo
On playing in her final home game:
"It was very nice to get a win on Friday. I definitely wanted to get the win today but I'm proud of our team because it's been a tough year for us, and a big adjustment because nobody is used to losing, but I'm just proud of the way that we've stuck together. To be able to bounce back from a 12-game losing streak and get a win on Friday - that's huge. We still have a few games left to make a difference and I have no doubt that we won't be able to come together and do that too."
On where she hopes to see the team in four years:
"Well I know that every person on this team has tremendous potential, especially our freshmen. Our freshmen have stepped up so much this year, and a few of them have been thrown into leadership positions. And they've really just grown this entire year. So I think if they continue to grow - and I know they will - this program is going to be off the charts in the next couple of years. I truly believe that."
