SEATTLE - Freshman forward Andrew Wiedeman's goal in the 69th minute stood as the gamewinner to lift No. 19/17 California over Washington, 1-0, in Pac-10 men's soccer action in front of 1,477 fans at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.
Wiedeman picked up a deflected shot from midfielder Javier Ayala-Hil and knocked it into the goal from 10 yards out at the 68:54 minute mark. The win secured the season sweep for the Pac-10 leading Golden Bears over Washington, as Cal edged the Huskies, 2-1, earlier this season in Berkeley.
The loss dropped Washington's overall record to 7-7-2, and 2-4-1 in conference play. Cal won its fourth straight, improving to 11-4-1 overall, 6-2-0 in league action.
The Huskies owned a 14-10 advantage on shots, led by four attempts from freshman forward Ellis McLoughlin and three from junior midfielder Raphael Cox, but UW was unable to capitalize on its opportunities.
"When it came to crunch time Cal made the play and we didn't," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "There's a reason they're in first place. I give credit to Cal, they stayed with their game plan. But I feel sorry that we didn't maximize our opportunities and take the lead sooner."
UW redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Stephen Fung grabbed three saves but surrendered the game's only goal. Cal goalkeeper Stefan Frei also grabbed three saves, two in the first half.
The Golden Bears have held the upper-hand in the series with Washington, now winning the last five straight meetings. The last Husky win over Cal came Oct. 16, 2005, in Berkeley.
Washington will next host Stanford in its regular season home finale, Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. The Huskies' seven-man senior class will be honored prior to the match. Washington will close out the regular season on the road next week at Oregon State (Nov. 14) and at San Diego State (Nov. 18).
