SEATTLE - A brace from senior Ely Allen in his final regular-season home game led an inspired Washington side to an impressive 4-2 victory over second-place Stanford in a Pac-10 men's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field.
Allen scored twice and recorded an assist on freshman Ellis McLoughlin's second career goal to help lift Washington's record to 8-7-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in league matches. Stanford fell to 6-6-5 overall and 3-4-2 in Pac-10 play.
The win pushed Washington ahead of San Diego State for fourth-place in the six-team Pac-10 standings, just one game behind third-place UCLA. The Huskies play at sixth-place Oregon State on Wednesday.
"We had some clear goal (today) and that was to push our record over .500." said Dean Wurzbeger, UW's head coach. "I was proud of the way our lads came back. We were not happy with Friday night (a 1-0 loss at home to Cal). We thought we missed a big chance.
"We still have a hope for the postseason. All that matters now is that we look ahead to Wednesday. This was a huge bounce-back win."
The match marked the final regular-season home appearance for seven Husky seniors: Allen (Kent, Wash.), Eric Blythe, Derek Crismier (Redmond, Wash.), Kevin Forrest (Edmonds, Wash.), Nick Loveless (Kenmore, Wash.), Steve Mohn (Kent, Wash.) and Stefan Tangen (Everett, Wash.). Six of the seven seniors played in the match with the exception of Forrest, a national award candidate who will miss the rest of the season due to injury.
Stanford outshot the Huskies by a 13-7 margin in the match but only five of the Cardinal shots were on frame. Conversely, four of Washington's shots found the back of the net and Stanford keeper John Moore went without a save in the match. Husky goalkeeper Stephen Fung (Honolulu, Hawai'i) registered three saves to earn the win.
Seattle native McLoughlin, who joined the team after fall training was concluded due to his participation for the U.S. National Team in the U-17 World Cup, opened the scoring with his second goal of the season after Allen found him open at the top of the 18-yard box. He blasted a shot past Stanford keeper John Moore to give Washington the early lead in the 18th minute.
Less than five minutes later Allen scored his first goal on a penalty kick to give Washington a 2-0 lead. The Cardinal pulled a goal back on Shaun Culver's first score of the season in the 34th minute.
Just more than four minutes after halftime, Allen took a pass from teammate Adam Lang (Chilliwack, B.C.) down the left flank and connected on his second goal of the game and league-leading 10th of the season to give UW a 3-1 lead. Freshman Matt Van Houten (Portland, Ore.) scored the first goal of his career in the 56th minute to give Washington its final score of the day and a 4-1 lead.
Alex Kozachenko scored from close range in the 80th minute to provide the final margin of victory.
Washington returns to action Wednesday in a key 7 p.m. match at Oregon State. Stanford. The Cardinal ends its season on Saturday with a rivalry match at home against California.
