Washington vs. Oregon
Saturday, February 23, 2002
Washington's win over Oregon is its first in the series since Jan. 13 1996, a span of 12 games. It is also the first win over Oregon for Husky head coach June Daugherty, who earned her 60th career Pac-10 win with the victory.
Giuliana Mendiola scored a Husky season high 31 points to better her previous career high of 22, set three times previously, including once earlier this season versus Cal. Mendiola hit 15 of 17 free throw attempts, both Husky season highs.
Today's Husky win, combined with an ASU loss, moves the Huskies into second place in the Pac-10 conference entering next week's conference tournament. Both UW and ASU finished with identical 12-6 Pac-10 records and split the season series 1-1.
Washington's Sarah Keeler made her first career start, finishing with two points and three rebounds.
Loree Payne scored 22 points, marking the seventh time this season, she has gone over the 20 point mark, equaling all other Huskies combined.
Today's attendance of 5,229 was the second best at Bank of American Arena this season.
Washington opened the game on a 9-1 run over the first 3:27, before Oregon strung together a 14-6 run of its own to tie the game at 15 with 12:51 left in the first half. The Huskies then closed out the half with a 30-18 run to take a 45-33 lead, and built that to 58-39 with 17:16 remaining in the game.
Washington's 88 points were its second most in a conference game this year. Other second bests include: free throw attempts (37) and free throws made (25).
