SEATTLE - On the strength of three home runs, the 12th-ranked Washington softball team powered its way past the visiting Oregon Ducks, 6-2, Sunday to sweep the three-game series between the two Pac-10 schools in 2001. With the win, the Huskies moved to 36-19 overall and 10-8 in conference play, while the Ducks fell to 27-36 and 1-17 in the Pac-10.
Two of the Huskies' three home runs on the day came with one out in the bottom of the first inning. With the outfielders drawn in because of her ability to slap, UW junior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) lifted an inside-the-park home run to right-center field to score the game's first run. After senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) walked, Washington sophomore Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) belted her team's second home run of the inning to deep right field, making the score 3-0.
The Ducks got one of the runs back an inning later as first baseman Triawn Custer, who went 2-for-3 on the day, singled and eventually came home on a one-out single by shortstop Kate Peterson.
The Huskies, however, recovered with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Clark, who had drawn a one-out walk and then stole second, scored Washington's fourth run following an RBI-double down the left field line by senior Kim DePaul (Tomball, Texas). DePaul came home one batter later as freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) crushed the first pitch from Oregon hurler Connie McMurren over the fence in right field for her third home run of the season.
Custer would strike again in the top of the fourth inning, leading off with a single to left field and eventually coming home on a bases-loaded infield single by Lynsey Haij.
Both pitchers, Oregon's McMurren and Washington's Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.), then settled down over the next three innings as McMurren did not allow another run, while Bollinger retired the side in order twice before giving way to reliever Shannon Walsh (Covina, Calif.) in the seventh.
Bollinger, who made her third start in as many days and her fourth of the week, moved to 32-5 overall, allowing seven hits and tallying five strikeouts. McMurren took the loss to fall to 8-17 in 2001.
Washington will travel to Arizona State and Arizona for its final three regular season and Pac-10 games. The Huskies will take on the Sun Devils Friday at 7 p.m., while the UW and Arizona tangle in doubleheader action Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. in Tucson.
