SEATTLE - The 13th-ranked Washington softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the third to erase a one-run deficit, defeating the third-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 3-2, Friday at Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the Huskies moved to 32-17 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10, while the Cardinal fell to 44-7-1 overall and 9-4 in conference action.
The Huskies got a huge offensive performance from sophomore All-American Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.), who went 3-for-3 at the plate, including two doubles and a pair of RBI. Stanford actually outhit the UW, 5-4, but the Cardinal went down in order in four of the last five innings.
Washington got on the board in its first at bat when Clark slapped a 2-2 change up down the left field line to score junior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.), who had reached base on a hit by pitch.
The Cardinal, however, responded in the bottom of the second when designated player Michelle Thiry and leftfielder Cassi Brangham recorded back-to-back singles. A fielding error by Husky first baseman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.), then loaded the bases with one out. Washington pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) got the next batter, Ramona Shelburne, to ground into a fielder's choice force out at the plate, but then gave up an RBI-single up the middle to Robin Walker, which drove in the two Cardinal runs.
The Huskies would also score a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the third, recording the tying run when senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) singled to center field to drive in freshman Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.), who had reached on a fielding error by the Cardinal shortstop. Hauxhurst, who had advanced to second on the throw, tallied what would turn out to be the winning run when Clark slapped a line drive which hit the bag at first base, popped up into the air and was tipped into right field off of Stanford second baseman Kira Ching's glove.
The Cardinal's best chance to tie the game came in the top of the sixth with runners on first and second and two outs. Bollinger, however, struck out Thiry to end the inning and then got Stanford to go down in order in the top of the seventh to finish the game.
Bollinger earned the win to move to 28-4 overall with six strikeouts, while Cardinal starter Maureen LeCocq took the loss to fall to 14-6.
Washington plays host to two more Pac-10 conference games with a single game on both Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) versus fourth-ranked California at Husky Softball Stadium.
