SEATTLE - Kim DePaul's (Tomball, Texas) grand slam in the bottom of the third inning turned out to be the game-winner, as the 13th-ranked Washington softball team downed fourth-ranked California, 5-1, Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies, winners of their last four games, moved to 33-17 overall and 7-6 in Pac-10 play, while the Golden Bears fell to 47-10 and 4-9 in conference action.
After rain delayed the start of the game by nearly an hour, the UW scored first when sophomore Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) blasted her third double in the last two days, scoring freshman Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) from second base.
Two innings later, the Huskies loaded the bases with one out when Roach singled, senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) walked and Clark was hit by a pitch. DePaul then drilled California pitcher Nicole DiSalvio's first pitch off the scoreboard in center field for her third career grand slam, giving the Huskies a 5-0 advantage.
The Golden Bears had a number of chances to score early, including in the second and fourth innings, when they loaded the bases with two outs. Washington starting pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.), however, got Cal centerfielder Pauline Duenas to lineout to second and third baseman Candace Harper to ground out to second to end both threats.
Cal mounted another charge in the seventh as rightfielder Mikella Pedretti's two-out single to the gap in right-center field drove in shortstop Paige Bowie from third to make the score 5-1. Bollinger finally ended the last threat a batter later as relief pitcher Jen Deering grounded out to Clark at shortstop to finish the game.
Bollinger, who moved to 29-4 overall with the win, tallied five strikeouts, but saw her streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run come to an end at a career-best 33.1 innings. DiSalvio took the loss for Cal, falling to 17-5 in 2001.
Washington plays one more Pac-10 conference game Sunday versus fourth-ranked California at Husky Softball Stadium at 1 p.m.
