Washington vs. Boise State
Washington coach June Daugherty
General Remarks:
"I hope we don't have to lose anymore to play like we did tonight. The goal going in was to offensively move better with out the ball, clean up our cuts and go harder, because of that we were able to get some great open looks. We are a jump shooting team and luckily for us our players were pretty much on. Defensively, I was very proud of our team. We held Boise State to 15 points during the second half and out rebounded them. Tonight as a team we accomplished what we have been working so hard on during practice."On Transition Defense: "The team had a great response in our transition defense. We wanted to make sure we got some great help and recover and off of that we were to get some great steals. Loree Payne was able to get in the passing lane and get some great steals."
On Player Rotation: "I wanted to give our younger players some good time on the floor and good opportunities to gain some experience. Our freshmen know that we are counting on them to not only play but to be big contributors just like our freshman last year. We made sure to rotate them but at the same time make sure our starters had a chance to get going."
On the upcoming games on road: "We have two tough games coming up on the road, at St. Marys and at the University of San Francisco. We want to concentrate on areas that we didn't do very well in tonight and build on those areas that we did well in. The team understands a lot better the transition defense and that we were able to make adjustments and were successful. Now we need to be successful for a full 40 minutes not just 20-25 minutes. We need to come out a little bit tougher than we did tonight especially on the road."
Junior forward Emily Autrey
On rebounding improvement: "Basically I had not been rebounding and the coaches talked to me about that so tonight I just focused on that and I got a lot of boards."
On the overall performance of the team: "I think we played an all-around game. We played good defense, our offense was flowing, people were hitting shots, and Loree couldn't miss. We had everything together tonight. It's what we have been trying to do the last couple games and haven't been able to and it was a great feeling to have everyone play so well and accomplish everything we have been trying to do in practice."
Junior guard Loree Payne
On coming out shooting well: "You gotta love games like this when you come out and hit the first couple shots and you get really confident. As an individual you get confident and also as a team everyone reacts to that and responds with a lot of energy. I think it brings the team together and gets everyone fired up. It really comes from the defensive end though. We make good stops and it converts into easy points and that gives us more confidence with our offense when we get easy lay-ups off steals. That confidence is the key to putting points on the board.
On the key to success offensively: "We have been working on really moving without the ball and really getting to where we have a lot of cuts and a lot of motion instead of so much standing around. That helps with moving the ball around the perimeter and puts us in rebounding position. It helps us get more shots off and get more rebounds cause people are moving around a lot more."
Freshman guard Kristen O'Neill
On feeling comfortable as a freshman: "I'm just trying to work the system and help the team as best as I can. It's been a bit of an adjustment coming in and learning the new offenses. I'm really working on fine tuning the small things so that when we keep getting further into the season I am not making the same mistakes as I was earlier on. I'm trying to go game by game and keep learning - it's been a huge learning experience - and try to take in everything I can."
