RECRUITING FOR PARENTS
Volleyball parents, welcome to the world of college recruiting!
First the good news, your daughter appears to have both the interest and the skills to play volleyball at the college level. As a parent, you want to do whatever you can to help make her dream a reality. Now the bad news, finding, reading and understanding the NCAA rules for recruiting - and you thought helping your children through trigonometry was difficult.
Conversations will contain a new vocabulary such as quite period, dead period, unofficial visits, official visits and contacts. Parents often have questions such as:
The three most important points to remember are:
1. You and your daughter can call, email or write a coach (at your expense) as often as you wish.
2. With the exception of during the "dead period", you and your daughter can make an unofficial visit (at your expense) to the college to meet with coaches, academic advisors and enrollment and academic departments as often as you wish.
3. You can and should insist that any contact with your daughter adheres to your definition of professional conduct. For example you may deem it unprofessional for a coach to contact your daughter in a chat room and ask about the prom.
An excellent way for parents to research the University and coaching staff is by conducting "unofficial" (non-paid) visits to the campus. There is no limit to the number of unofficial visits. Also, parents may phone or send emails to the coaches as often as they wish.
Be proactive! Do your research on the college and the coaches. Call, write or email any of the University of Washington Volleyball coaches. They will be happy to help.
